"Karen Ranney writes with power, passion, and dramatic flair." --Stephanie Laurens "Ranney is a rich, rare find." --Judith Ivory   New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Ranney returns to the Highlands with A Highland Duchess--the second book in her lush Scottish historical romance series which began with Sold to a Laird. It started out alright, although I found the circumstances of Emma's 1st marriage implausible. Furthermore, I think she was more bothered about her reputation and social standing than being bothered about what happened to her mind and person. After the first third of the book, my attention started to waver and after a while I started skipping pages.
Other people might well enjoy this book, but it just wasn't for me. ( )

Very disappointing. The heroine spent most of the book as a complete doormat just letting life happen to her and not trying to do anything on her own. The initial plot device to introdue the hero and heroine to each other was completely useless. Its never really explained why the hero went to these lengths - well, its explained but makes no sense. Some devices in the middle of the book were a complete waste and not what I expect in a romance novel. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil the plot but just an incredible waste of time. First off, I must state that I respect the author, Karen Ranney and I loved her book "The Devil Wears Tartan". I am also very fond of her Highland Lords Series. As for her latest book, she might as well have PHONED IT IN! The first thing that comes to mind in regards to this book is - disappointment. I was really shocked that this was even published. As of late, her work is just not cutting it. This story was BLAND as bland can get. It felt to me as she didn't even TRY to develop the characters, let alone the whole story! What really disappoints is that it COULD (SHOULD) have been very good. The bones were there, and that is the ONLY reason that I read it all through the AGONIZING end. I should have FELT something for Emma, but the writing was so bland, and rushed through that as a reader I felt only ANGER at the Author for not at least trying harder to do these characters justice!! What a waste of time!!!! I do NOT recommend it. PLEASE do not buy it! You will be greatly disappointed. ( )
