Earthquakes are a natural occurring shifts of the earth. In this book the author tells about what creates earthquakes. The book discusses plates moving and the reason they move. It also tells about the events during and following an earthquake. During an earthquake the ground, building, and objects are shaken. Depending on the strength of an earthquake will determine the damages. After an earthquake there can be other natural causes such as tsunamis.

I really enjoyed this informational book. I think it is important to know why things happen in nature. I think kids need to be aware of the surrounding world so they won't be surprised when the natural things occur. I have felt three earthquakes in my lifetime, but i realize that the earth shakes daily. I would like to do a natural occurrences section in my classroom. I would like to take about earthquakes, weather, and wildfires.

Classroom Extension 1: I would make several containers of jello. I would have the students place small objects on top of the jello. I would have the students shake the jello container from side to side. I would then have then journal about what they saw the objects do and how the movement effected them.

Classroom Extension 2: Using a package of Oreos, the students would each reserve one cookie. I would ask them to demonstrate what it looks like for plates to slide past one another, to slide over one another, and slide under one another. ( )
