History. Young Adult Nonfiction. HTML:

Nonfiction master Russell Freedman illuminates for young readers the complex and rarely discussed subject of World War I. The tangled relationships and alliances of many nations, the introduction of modern weaponry, and top-level military decisions that resulted in thousands upon thousands of casualties all contributed to the "great war," which people hoped and believed would be the only conflict of its kind. In this clear and authoritative account, the Newbery Medal-winning author shows the ways in which the seeds of a second world war were sown in the first. Numerous archival photographs give the often disturbing subject matter a moving visual counterpart. Includes source notes, a bibliography, and an index.

This amazing book provides descriptions and analyses of every aspect of World War I, beginning with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, and includes a discussion of the Treaty of Versailles and how it set the stage for World War II. Captioned photographs capture what life was like for the common foot soldier, and how advances in weapons technology, the use of trench warfare, and advances in naval ships intensified the death and destruction. This will be an excellent resource for middle and high school teachers. Index, Source Notes, Bibliography.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked a war so gruesome that the entire Western Front is marked with gave yards. From determination to death all though out of the war is so terrifying, that there was barely a family without a son or father. To the life in the trenches to the battles it self the entire war was horrible. Both sides were determined to win but throughout the war it looked like neither would win. With so many changes in technology it became one of the bloodiest wars to been seen. Which side will win and which side suffered the most loses?
I quite liked this book but not to the extent that it was the best book in my life. I found that this book was mainly stating the facts. Instead of a heart warming story I thought it was going to be it was more of a history book. I thought that there were too many pictures in this book and not enough words. The author wrote this book a little bit too childish for me. I also wish that this book had a better lay out. Like I said this book wasn’t my favorite but it was a decent book. ( )

Heavy on photos and other illustrations a useful visual overview of World War I. I heard this promoted on NPR's Fresh Air (or another NPR program, possibly) a number of years ago because so many of the photographs were being published for the first time, or at least for the first time in decades. This is not an in-depth study of the reasons for the war or the details of geopolitics of the war. But, despite it being shelved in the "Youth" section of my library, it is also a clear-eyed, serious overview of the war. ( )

Freedman presents very succinct, factual information about a highly complex and terrible event in human history. Incredibly well researched, with the inclusion of firsthand sources and photographs, the book will capture the attention of any student fascinated by history.
