Though I enjoyed Laura's contribution to Project Runway I was ready to hate this book. As one of nine children I have had enough of the reality-tv-mom-tells-what-it's-really-like stories that end up being NOTHING like the way I was raised. Instead of a sappy, sentimental, and unrealistic portrayal of the life of a large family I got a witty, provocative and humorous narrative. At times the stories didn't always seem to flow easily from one to another but they were always attention-grabbing and easy to read. Unapologetically addicted to nicotine gum and singing the praises of her "girls" Laura Bennett is surely on her way to being the Erma Bombeck for the modern Manolo-wearing Mom. I found it amazing how relaxed and unorganized her household is. You with think with six kids (5 boys) that she would have to run her house like a small military. Nope, in the long run her kids will grow up appreciating that everything in life doesn't neatly fit into a schedule. I'm shocked how often I think of this book. Laura is unabashedly deconstructionist in her approach to parenting and life. I love that she's addicted to nicotine gum, she doesn't bother teaching her boys not to use obscenities, and she wears a corset. She is a picture of what is to come, society's inevitable production, which is somewhat terrifying. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. I had no knowledge of Laura prior to reading her book. She was a participant in a NY reality show focusing on fashion. That's still all I know about the reality show part of her life. She is also the mother of 6 children: one grown daughter and five young boys. I read the book to see what another mother of many might have to say. Her story sounds very similar to ours. I got a bit tired of so many mentions of testosterone and feel that she allows a bit more nonsense than we do. We do agree, however, that a parent who does everything for a child is not doing themselves or that child a service. Mostly, I found her book to be interesting. This author has a chance as long as people keep having babies and forgetting the parenting part. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
