A Gospel for Liberals explores the life and teachings of Jesus in context with the social, political, and economic circumstances of his day, leaving us with a convincing portrayal of him as a progressive activist who was eventually executed for this very reason. It's a refreshing and brazen exegesis of the liberating truths of the historical Jesus, yet presents him as nothing more than an ordinary human being whose profound teachings still hold practical meaning for us today. A Gospel for Liberals culminates with an enlightening new Gospel account that for the first time ever enables the modern reader to experience how the story would have impacted those who first heard it 2000 years ago, yet makes this timeless prophet a continuing inspiration for today's social reformers. A Gospel for Liberals finally says what progressives have known all along-Jesus was one of us!… (mehr)

This book, by a brave liberal minister, offers persuasive arguments that Jesus can be seen as a situational ethicist, civilly disobedient, a draft-dodger, a communist, an environmentalist, pro-choice, a feminist, a gay-rights advocate, for universal healthcare, a member of the liberal media and for the ethical treatment of animals. Interwoven with these arguments are many personal anecdotes and historical references to support his views. The book is capped off with "The Gospel According to Todd"; a retelling of the Gospel stories in light of these views. The central theme is that Jesus' life and message have been co-opted to support people in positions of influence and power, and that a careful reading of the gospel stories reveals a truer life and mission.
