From antiquity to the present day, in the east and the west, the methods and motives for terror are disturbingly similar. In An Anatomy of Terror, Andrew Sinclair takes a detailed trip through the dark side of humanity from Muslim assassins and the Crusades to Timothy McVeigh and Osama bin Laden. As he does, he encounters many links between seemingly disparate groups and illuminates the strategies that terrorists employ in order to recruit the footsoldiers who so often carry out these acts of terror. This book was a bit of a disappointment. There's not much analysis in it, Sinclair focuses mainly in describing all sorts of violence and terror in the past. The history of western civilization (and probably whole mankind) is a history of terrorism and nothing much has changed in this respect since the destruction of Carthage, according to Sinclair. That's it. ( )
