Such a dilemma. Her writing style leaves a lot to be desired. Doesn't know the meaning of show not tell. But it's a rattlin' good yarn and she keeps the pace up. Not sure I would read another because of her clumsy style. ( )

I don't rate this as highly as others. A good holiday read but for me the characters are stereotypes and it was obvious from very early that the heroine hadn't committed the murders. The bad got their just deserts and the good lived haopily ever after, very 18th century! ( )

I enjoyed this book, it was the first Martina Cole book I've read though I've been given loads of them. The characters were very real and brought to life well. The story was a bit shocking but believable. Although I wanted to not like Marie, the main character, the telling of the story made me feel some sympathy for her. The book is well written and probably warranted the thickness of the book (it didn't have any pointless rambling which normally puts me off thicker books). I probably will read more of Martina Cole's books but it wasn't so fantastic as to have me reaching for the entire back catalogue immediately. ( )

I really enjoyed this story, but found the wild East London characters to be very disturbing. I felt that I have no idea of the conditions under which other, less fortunate, people live. The underworld is extremely disturbing, but makes for compelling reading. An excellent story. ( )

This is a very good thriller by, what else, a British woman. Facless is a hard hitting story in the wilds of East London where violence, poverty and crime are simple facts of life. Marie has just emerged from prison, having spent 12 years for murdering two of her friends during a drug induced stupor. She remembers very little about the incident but believes she must have done it. But did she? That is not something she has much time to ponder for she is alone in a halfway house, desperate to find her children, and attempting to reach out to her parents and sister who have abandoned her years ago. She has no friends. Her searches lead her to immediate danger. There are people waiting for her, some fearful of retribution , some out to exact some retribution themselves. This is a great escapist read. ( )
