( ) "The summer she was eleven, Drusilla went abroad with her parents"..., October 22, 2014 This review is from: The Remembered Visit: A Story Taken from Life (Hardcover) This was unlike the other Edward Gorey stories I had read: it's not funny - rather it's a somewhat sad tale of young Drusilla, abroad with her parents. One day a family acquaintance takes her out to visit elderly Mr Crague. The things Drusilla observes about the visit - the topiary; Mr Crague's not wearing socks; the crystallised ginger - are the kind of things that stick in a child's mind, years after an event. They are irrelevant yet they remain vivid recollections. When, years later, Drusilla recalls her unfulfilled promise to let Mr Crague (now deceased) have her collection of envelope-linings, she feels sad and lets the paper blow away through the window. Does that represent letting go of the "sad and neglectful" feelings she has about her broken promise? Whereas most of Gorey's work is nonsense, this is one that seems to have a deeper meaning. Rather lovely in a strange, dreamlike way. Zeige 4 von 4 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

On a long trip abroad, Gorey's young Drusilla is introduced to high art and gourmet meals. She gamely tries to appreciate the museums, rich food, and architectural wonders that delight her parents, only to find herself drifting along in a puzzling world. But then Miss Skrim-Pshaw takes her for tea with Mr Crague, a sockless, elderly man with a notable past, and their brief encounter is what will haunt Drusilla years later. Her casual promise to the old man has led to sudden recollection, then sad regret. In this curious coming-of-age tale, Edward Gorey employs his signature dark humor and exquisite illustrations to deftly portray the precociousness of a child on the brink of adulthood. One of the most enigmatic of Gorey's many books, The Remembered Visit, originally released in 1965, is unforgettable. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
