While I wasn't sure that this monograph was going to rise much above antiquarian interest the authors do get the most out of their limited and fragmented resources to tell the story of a unit that was scapegoated more often than it was celebrated, but which came into its own during Grant's Overland Campaign and the long siege at Petersburg. Even if you have no use for the cause one does have to respect the hardihood of those who endured; the authors having a good eye for dubious command politics, grossly inadequate supply and the ghastly misery that is the aftermath of a battle.
