A "solid" treatment of Eliot's Anglo-Catholicism although it is written from "outside": the author is well-informed and sympathetic but misses some details that a formed Anglo-Catholic would not (for instance, he makes an argument regarding Murder in the Cathedral turning on the exact text of the minor propers in the English Missal (as compared to the Coverdale psalms) without considering that Eliot might have referred to the Anglican Missal, which Eliot follows). Well worth reading if you are not acquainted with Anglo-Catholicism and want an idea of how Eliot's work fits into his beliefs and is illuminated by it. ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Barry Spurr's eagerly-awaited, definitive study of T.S. Eliot's Anglo-Catholic belief and practice shows how the poet's religion shaped his life and work for almost forty years, until his death in 1965. The author examines Eliot's formal adoption of Anglo-Catholicism, in 1927, as the culmination of his intellectual, cultural, artistic, spiritual and personal development to that point. This book presents the first detailed analysis of the unique influence that Anglo-Catholicism's doctrinal and devotional principles, and its social teaching, had on Eliot's poetry, plays, prose and personal life.
