A superb, sweeping review of the actions of the BEF from the first shots at Mons to the close of First Ypres. Elegantly written, with a compelling use of narrative from the Old Contemptible themselves. A must-read.

An informative history of London's Metropolitan Police written for the 150th anniversary in 1979. It is a top down story, very concerned with the Police Commissioners and hardly anything on the Policemen on the beat. It is well written and I found it quite interesting but it is not a story of derring do or of great detective work. It is the history of a Police force and not the history of policemen in that force. An important distinction.
