Stephen Bullivant

This speaker is an award winning lecturer in Theology and Ethics at the University of St Mary’s Twickenham, awarded his D.Phil from Oxford University and author of two books on the theology of atheism,
Dr Stephen Bullivant is Senior Lecturer in Theology and Ethics at St Mary's University College, Twickenham. In 2010 he was the first non-American to receive the 'LaCugna Award for New Scholars' from the Catholic Theological Society of America. Stephen is the author of The Salvation of Atheists and Catholic Dogmatic Theology (Oxford University Press, 2012) and Faith and Unbelief (Canterbury Press, 2013). He is also co-editor of Secularity and Non-Religion (Routledge, 2013) and The Oxford Handbook of Atheism (Oxford University Press, 2013).
According to recent British sociological data, almost 40% of those brought up as Catholics no longer identify as such, with most of those now claiming to have 'no religion'. More than half of those who do still identify as Catholics attend church less than once a month (and over a third attend less than once a year). However we choose to describe them - 'lapsed', 'non-churchgoing', or 'resting' Catholics? - it is essential that the Church gains a better understanding of who, precisely, these statistics represent. I read this book in preparation for an upcoming sermon that I'm preaching on Trinity Sunday. Essentially, it is an exegesis of the following statements, which he believes underpins this theological doctrine:

1. There is only one God.
2. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is each God.
3. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not the same.

Although grasping the Trinity can sometimes be elusive, this author enabled me to better understand this theological construct. Additionally, his explanation of the various historical heresies which arose as the model for the Trinity was debated was also clear.… (mehr)
