Really excellent book. So true to our current world. I've read one of Mr. Hamilton's books before and was equally impressed with that one. His writing style is fluid and focused. You get an immediate connection with the characters and the situation they are in. Absolutely loved the book.

You live your life in hopes of making your country and your president happy because he gave you everything you needed when you needed it and then some. Just like any other child at some point you must look into yourself and decide if the decisions your parents have made are what is truly best for you. When Dr. Toropov, a daughter of the nation,(for having received the Gold cross Daughter of the nation for her high grades in school) becomes aware that there is something not right about so many things will she decide the fate of others? As a doctor you cannot play God but you can protect those who others try to play God with. So many mysteries and yet so few answers. So many people involved but it’s hard to know who is doing what and where they are all connected. George Hamilton gives you a story that shows you how cruel and unjust a government can be when it is under a dictatorship. The wall has fallen but the fences are still there. When her country discovers a possible cure for the disease that is killing off 95% of the people who are near it and the cure is helping a large majority of those who already have it or protect them from getting it. The only problem is the 3 % that die almost instantly from it. Gene splicing and eradication, is the name of the game and if you can take out your enemy with a cure you know they will take, why not use it. The ending will leave you with plenty of questions and I am hoping a second story will help me to answer them.
Great read, a bit hard to get started but once you do it will catch you!!

Very good read. It was nice to see a story about a time and place I hadn't read before. We all know about the slaves in America, but I can't recall ever reading about Jamaica and slavery before. The cruelty was beyond anything any human should endure. This story showed the strength and courage of the slaves. And it showcased the horrors of their lives quite clearly. I don't mean to preach, but if we as a race could just realize that we all bleed red. Then maybe we could accomplish way more than we do with the energy we don't waste on prejudice and discrimination. This book showed how cruel we as humans can be. That takes a talented writer. Very well written and described.… (mehr)

[The Disease] by [George Hamilton] was a medical thriller that pits government loyalty versus the good of humanity. I would like to say this was a post apocalyptic story but sadly I can see events like this being possible today.

The characters of Olga and Ludmilla face choices that will not only affect them but possibly the entire world. The setting is an Eastern European nation while a pandemic rages. Ludmilla is a doctor and "Daughter of the Nation", while Olga her daughter is a dissident. Who can be trusted and what is the right choice are themes throughout this novel.… (mehr)
