Tedious. I am done with this series. The mysteries are convoluted and overdone to the point of boredom. The interplay between characters is predictable and doesn’t progress. Only stuck through it this long in the hope that Bree and Anderley would be featured more.

Interesting family twist can’t save this from being a very low 3. At least Keira has stopped « wrapping (her) arms » around herself all the time.

Only 9% in but……”Lettuce”?!!!!
Through all her research, doesn’t Huber know that the name is spelled “Lettice”?
Killer was TOO obvious.

Sisters of Fortune by Anna Lee Huber follows the three Fortune sisters during their voyage on the Titanic, and if you enjoyed the outfits and ship details from James Cameron’s movie, Titanic, you will be completely entranced with Huber’s descriptions throughout her novel.

While I really enjoyed all the amazing details and how well Huber researched the era and event, at times, the amount of characters and how she switched between the sisters, didn’t have me confused exactly, but I found myself stopping to think a bit more than I wanted to in order to remember who was who. Huber did include a detailed list of characters at the beginning, but I didn’t want to continually have to stop and go back to the list.

I would definitely recommend Sisters of Fortune, especially to readers who enjoy Historical Fiction or stories about the Titanic.

Sisters of Fortune, an epic story, is based on the true story of the three Fortune sisters, who with their parents and younger brother, set sail on the maiden voyage of the Titanic as the finale of a Grand Tour of Europe.

This story is written from the viewpoints of each sister: Flora, the oldest sister, dutiful and sensible, is returning home reluctantly to a fiancé she does not love; Alice, the middle sister, also engaged, wants to be free of the restrictions of the era; and Mabel, the youngest sister, who is strong-willed, seeks education rather than conventional marriage and family. Huber did a wonderful job joining fact and fiction of who these three women were, and what they came to discover about themselves during their time on the Titanic, giving each their own distinct and interesting personalities.

The author really draws her readers in with her descriptions of the magnificent surroundings her characters witnessed while sailing on the Titanic, showing off her detail to research This story is hard to read at times as we all know what happens in the end to the Titanic, but Huber does not end Sisters of Fortune at the sinking, giving her readers a pleasant ending. I highly recommend this standalone heart-wrenching story written by Anna Lee Huber.

Many thanks to Kensington Publishing via NetGalley for the opportunity read and review an advance copy of this wonderful book, Sisters of Fortune. I was under no obligation whatsoever to write a favorable review and all opinions are my own.

I really liked this. I mean, we all know what happens on the maiden voyage of this unsinkable ship. The Fortune family, from Winnipeg, Canada, were real passengers on the Titanic and because they remained so close mouthed about their harrowing experience, Huber is able to craft a gripping story about them. The parents, along with the four youngest children, are returning home after a grand tour of Europe and Egypt. The two older girls are betrothed but have very different feelings about what awaits them back home. Responsible Flora is open to a shipboard flirtation, while Alice worries about a cossetted future after the freedom of her trip. Youngest girl Mabel wants to convince her father to let her go to university as she searches for meaning among some of the accomplished female passengers. Charlie, the youngest, is mesmerized by the ship itself, exploring every nook and cranny. It was an engrosing and fascinating read that truly kept me turning the pages to the end.

Sisters of Fortune by Anna Lee Huber

The story the Fortune sisters: Flora, Alice and Mable along with their parents and Brother returning form a long trip abroad, traveling on the infamous RMS Titanic.

Each Sister is unique in thought, hopes and dreams. Their lives will be forever changed on that dreadful night when the "unsinkable vessel" plunges to the bottom of the Ocean.

A compelling story with attention to detail and engaging dialog. Perfectly blending fact, fiction, real passengers (and) events leading up to the dreadful night, had me engrossed from the start.

Sisters of Fortune brought out all the feels in this emotionally charged memorable read. I highly recommend to those who enjoy Historical fiction (based on true events). I look forward to reading more fromAnna Lee Huber .

I've read several books and seen several movies based on the topic of the Titanic. Most have been informative and worthwhile my time. "Sisters of Fortune" by Anna Lee Huber fell into this category. The plot focuses on the lives of the wealthy Fortune family from Winnipeg, Canada. Like the Fortune family, some of the characters were actual historical figures, while some were made up. I loved how Ms. Huber took her time developing the characters and her storyline, before delving into the sinking of the Titanic. In my opinion, this really added to the intensity of the plot. The characters, plot and setting were so well described, that the reader could easily picture the scenes throughout the novel. There are quite a few characters in this novel, the "Cast of Characters" listed at the beginning, helps the reader have a better understanding of what lies ahead. The book also includes discussion questions at the end, which would make this novel a great book club read.

A harrowing historical novel based on real events and characters surrounding the Titanic tragedy, This book is for historical fiction readers and Titanic enthusiasts. The beginning starts off a little slow, from all of the character introductions and descriptions of the ship and time period, but the pace speeds up as the story progresses. It was thoroughly researched. Many real survivors and victims, even lesser known ones, and little historical tidbits are intertwined into the romance. I enjoyed it!

Thank you @netgalley for the ARC

This is a historical fiction book about three sisters who with their parents and brother board the ill fated Titanic on its doomed voyage.

The three Fortune sisters Alice, Flora and Mabel are heading home to Canada after a grand family european vacation. Flora and Alice are engaged. Mabel the youngest wants to go to university, Flora ends up flirting with Chess Kinsley an amateur tennis player. Slowly, they start to fall in love. As disaster happens the ladies come to find out what they are really made of.

The author did a wonderful job with the historical descriptions of what happened before and after the Titanic hit the iceberg. This story is based on real people . The sisters were very strong and survived. I was curious and ended up looking the Fortune Sisters up on the internet. I read a few old articles I was able to find and these three women were heroines. Thank you Ann Lee Huber for this book.

This book was one of the most poignant, evocative, and beautifully written books I have ever read. It made the Titanic’s voyage real to me – in every way. The author tells the story through the Fortune family who were actually on the voyage in real life, but little is known of them. Their story is fictional but, goodness, you feel it – as if you are right there with them. You feel the bubbling, electric excitement of the passengers as they board the unsinkable Titanic. You feel the glamour of the jewels and the people, the sumptuousness of the surroundings. You also feel the panic, heroism, and bravery of the passengers and crew. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book that gave me so many feels.

The Fortune family – father, mother, brother, and three sisters – were taking their version of the Grand Tour. They traveled from their home in Canada to Europe where they spent time in all the great places and even went to the Middle East to ride camels and see the sights in the desert before finally deciding to travel home on the marvel of the times – the Titanic.

The story's main focus is on the three sisters, Flora, Alice, and Mabel, and their lives, expectations, frustrations, loves, and insecurities. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses – hopes and dreams. They also find they are stronger than they ever thought they could be – especially in a time when women were to be coddled and looked after like fine porcelain figurines. However, we also get to know, like, and respect their father as well as their mother and young brother who had so much ahead of him in life.

Flora is the older sister – dutiful, caring, obedient, and engaged to a man of her parents' choosing. As she grapples with that expectation, she meets a man who captures her attention totally and finally wins her heart. Will her parents agree to her ending her current engagement?

Alice is also engaged, but to a man she adores – but she has trepidations of returning home. She wants adventure, travel, and excitement, not the protected life her fiancé has described to her. Can she find a way to have both adventure and her fiancé?

Mabel is the rebel of the family – she chafes at being coddled and protected – she believes women have intelligence and should receive an education, the right to vote, etc. Her father adamantly denies her when she begs to go to college. Can she convince him while they are on this voyage?

If you love historical fiction, or even if you don’t, you will surely enjoy this book. Anna Lee Huber’s research and attention to detail is second to none. When you finish the book, you will feel as if you walked the corridors of the Titanic, smelled the delicious aromas of the rich foods, felt the sea breeze on your face, met all of the people on board – the glamorous and the not so glamorous, and felt the fear and panic as the passengers tried to find and board lifeboats.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Verity's friend Ada brings a gun to dinner with a household of guests. A male servant pockets the gun to return it to its place. However, later that evening Ada's husband, Lord Rockham, is murdered. The time is shortly after the Great War ended, and secrets from the war come to play in the novel. Verity and her husband Sidney investigate this one as well as the death of a woman who served as a redactor during the war. The police see nothing suspicious in this case, but Verity sees potential. Could the two seemingly unconnected crimes be related? While Verity trusts DCI Thoreau to an extent, she believes external pressures could result in the wrong person being convicted or the case remaining unresolved. Some loose threads remain dangling at the end, probably to set up a future installment. I listened to the audio version of the book.½

I am a tiny bit unhappy with this novel. The main part of the story revolves around sister Flora, and when looking up the family for more references, I didn't find the name Flora to be on the passenger list. https://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/features/t... It took some delving to find out that Flora's first name is really Ethel. I almost felt cheated until I did my extra research. Yes, yes, I am one of those PIA's who like to see if the facts are correct when a fictional story is based on truth.

The other things that I was unhappy about were 1- the huge amount of characters who did not always show up under the name with which you first met them. 2- the interminable descriptions of the clothing and food. 3-the quickness of the romance.

The writing was well done otherwise, and since we already knew how the story was going to play out, it was clever of the author to pick this family to write about. The sisters all had a lot of issues, and it compelled me to finish what might have been a bit of a lackluster novel.

This side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber is a 2017 publication.

Just after the Great War, Verity, who lost her husband, Sidney, in the war, has been invited to the engagement party of one of Sidney’s fellow officers. Upon arrival, Verity is shocked to find a copy of ‘The Pilgram’s Progress’- the book she had given to Sidney, in her room. Inspecting the book, she finds a hidden, encrypted missive along with a suggestion her husband was a traitor.

On alert, Verity is determined to discover who is accusing her husband of such a heinous crime. It becomes immediately clear that something untoward was going on with the thirtieth division- and now, cut off from civilization, anyone who might know the truth is being eliminated. Not knowing who to trust, Verity must tread carefully, or she could be next!

A wonderfully entertaining mystery! Just what I was in the mood for. I really liked Verity, the surprise twists, set time and place, and the way everything came together in the end. I started this book back in November but was surprised by a few last-minute Thanksgiving developments so I opted to put it aside until I could truly focus on it and I’m glad I did. It was worth waiting for!

The story is well thought out and for a first in a series the author did an amazing job of putting all the characters into their positions and giving us plenty of incentives to catch the next installment….

Which I hope to do- sooner rather than later!!

4 plus stars½

This is a fictional account of what happened to the Fortune family on that fateful journey on the Titanic. Yes, we know what happens to that ship, but though the eyes of the author, the opulence, the people, some famous that we rub shoulders with.
The Fortune family from Winnipeg Canada, have been touring both Africa and Europe, from the pyramids to castles, and now are returning home to marriages of two of the three daughters traveling. Alice, Flora, and Mable, along with their parents and younger brother Charlie have finished their grand tour and now on the fastest, and safest ship ever built, heading home to their futures.
We are given a grand tour of the ship through Charlie, he has read everything available on this great ship! We are also there for some sweet shipboard romance, but can it continue? Unfortunately, we are there as the disaster happens, and further mistakes are made. We also see whom is able to survive.
I thank Anna Lee Huber for bringing this this story alive, and putting faces on this tragic journey! Be sure to read the Author's notes!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.

I haven't read the first two books in the series. However, that doesn't seem to have any affect on my grasp. This book is a lot like Mills and Boons than a Georgian crime/suspense thriller. There a lot of characters that are introduced on whim but had little bearing on the plot. The narration lacked a build up. I skimmed through at least 25 percent of the book. Those sections are painfully stretched.

1919. Umbersea Island, England.

Verity had declined the invitation to a weekend house party to celebrate an engagement. An enigmatic note suggesting Verity’s husband committed treason changed her decision, becoming determined to set her widow’s grief aside. She’ll be surrounded by her husband’s fellow officers as one is the groom-to-be, and this might be her only chance to learn who would make such an accusation. Not even Sidney knew she worked for the Secret Service during the war, so it adds complexity that the note writer alluded to her secret too.

Having recently watched Agatha Christie’s "And Then There Were None," television mini-series (released in 2015), I matched the author’s atmospheric writing to the images of the film’s island setting and the isolation from the mainland during a storm. I was entranced by the mystery and intrigued by the twists of red herrings. Suspense was heightened with more secrets than anticipated. Differences in experiences dependent on an individual’s role at home or abroad, on or off the battlefield, the impact of experiences, and how each person copes with the physical and/or mental aftereffects and memories are well portrayed.

Perhaps I was never meant to warm to the reveal of an unexpected character as I had grown fond of another party guest. I’ll continue to read the series as I’m anxious to know what path Verity chooses for her future. It was easy to picture this intelligent and independent woman working for the Secret Service, but I think she’ll choose more than romance as the intrigue in her life.

This is yet another delightful addition to Anna Lee Huber's Lady Darby mystery series - set in Yorkshire, England in August of 1832.

On his way to Scotland, Lord Gage and his retinue are attacked on a Yorkshire road by highwaymen. It is, after all, the land of Robin Hood and his happy band. Sebastian Gage receives word of the attack and he and Kiera drop everything to rush to his wounded father's bedside. As ever, tensions between father and son, run high. The details of the attack seem unusual and rather conflicting. With only a parish constable at hand, it isn't long before Sebastian and Kiera are off and about trying to find the perpetrators of the attack. Was it a political attack or even possibly a personal one? Will they be able to flesh it all out before someone else is wounded or killed? So much expectation rests upon their shoulders.

I have loved this series from the start with its smart writing and well-researched historical detail. This installment gives us a glimpse into Kiera's foray into motherhood as she meets the demands of a four month old daughter. And what grandfather can resist the gurgling smiles of a precious grandchild and their bright eyes of wonder? Ms. Huber beautifully captures the delicate relationships among family members as well as those between servants and those being served. If you enjoy an historical mystery with a small touch of chaste romance, then this might just be the series for you.

I am grateful to Ms. Huber and her publisher, Penguin Random House LLC, for having provided a complimentary copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads. Their generosity, however, has not influenced this review - the words if which are mine alone.
