A.J. Marcus grew up in Texas. He’s always had a fascination with cowboys, comic books and the great outdoors. He started writing in high school and at times spent more time writing than he did reading, and he’s a voracious reader. Maybe it was growing up in Texas, but his love of rugged men showed up even before he realized what was going on. He likes his men manly, hard, tough and caring, men with hearts, and other parts, as big as Texas.

A.J. currently lives near Colorado Springs, Colorado with his loving partner and several horses. The men here are still men

Finding your soul mate is hard enough, but imagine the complications if you find him – in the past – then lose him to a violent death. Again and again. That is the situation Conrad faces. Luckily, he has the help and support of the woman who intended no more than a past life regression.

Conrad is very open to the magic of visiting past lives. When he finds a special man and realizes he is his soul mate, he is determined to find the man again. But this time, he wants to know who he is in the present. Conrad’s present. For a while it looks pretty hopeless. It takes all of Conrad’s stubbornness to keep going, and seeing him losing the love of his life not once but several times was very hard.

If you like the idea of soul mates, if past life regression holds a certain fascination for you, and if you enjoy stories about star-crossed lovers finding a way out of their predicament, you will probably like this one.

As a paranormal Western, this book had my attention. If you assume that werewolves exist, it makes sense for them to have lived in the “wild” parts of the US – much like Native Americans - before Europeans started moving across the continent to claim the land. And the wolves in this story are much like Native Americans: they live in harmony with nature, they don’t own land, they respect each other’s needs and packs, and they don’t have any real defense against guns and the human’s territorial ideas. So when a group of humans who have claimed the land legally comes along to make a living raising cattle, the wolves don’t understand, nor do they like them intruding on their privacy. But when a second group of humans comes along and is apparently intent on taking the same piece of land by force, the wolves begin to figure out that not all humans are the same.

Elijah and his family are the ones who have a legal claim to the land, and while they know that wolves have followed them for a while and are watching them, they are not sure why they don’t attack. Elijah is the one who begins to figure it out, he is the one most open to communicating with the wolves – especially Armand, and in the end, Elijah takes the lead in making a deal so they can all live in peace.

Armand has been watching the groups of humans, trying to figure out what makes them tick. And why they are so different from wolves. He can take human form, but he much prefers to be a wolf. When his elders tell him of their plan for a deal, Armand as no choice but to take human form more often, so he can talk to Elijah and get him to cooperate. I loved how Armand’s approach to human customs was so different, how he has trouble with having to wear clothes, and how his growing bond with Elijah becomes more and more important as they get to know and trust each other.

If you like Westerns with a paranormal touch, if you want to see how “man meets wolf” might have happened in Colorado before it even became a territory in 1861, and if you’re looking for a read about cross-cultural issues of building trust before beginning a closer relationship, then you might like this novella.

The longest night, or the winter solstice, is a holiday I can see shifters celebrate. Especially assuming they are closer to nature than humans due to being part animal. In this story bear shifter Bran is on his way to his clan’s gathering when his car breaks down, there is a blizzard, and he is desperate for shelter. Bears, you see, like to sleep through the solstice – probably a remnant of their bear natures. The idea made me smile, while at the same time, I was curious to see what happens to Bran once he falls asleep in a cave so deep that he has trouble getting inside in one piece.

When he wakes up there is someone with him, and the guy has thoughtfully provided “breakfast” in the form of a hare. After a week asleep, Bran is hungry enough to devour it in one sitting. Once he is done, he starts asking questions, and soon figures out the man guarding the cave is also a shifter – a very rare dragon. I liked how they get to know each other just briefly before deciding to go look for Bran’s clan, after all, they are shifters!

If you like stories about paranormal beings and their winter holiday traditions, and if you’re looking for a short, entertaining read with a touch of mystery, then you might like this short story.

New Mexico is the state at the center of this installment of the ‘States of Love’ series, a collection of romantic stories that spans every corner of the United States. The two main characters meet at one of the big local festivals, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Rusty, an ad executive from Santa Fe, has never been before, but he needs pictures for one of his clients and has convinced his best friend, Tyler, who is a photographer, to go with him. Chad owns a hot-air balloon in rainbow colors and loves piloting it. Rusty and Tyler are drawn to the balloon design and since Tyler knows Chad and his crew from previous encounters, they manage to snag a ride with Chad. New Mexico being the “Land of Enchantment”, what follows is a very romantic beginning to a relationship.

Rusty is new to ballooning, but the experience is memorable. So is Chad, and Rusty soon figures out a way to stay in touch and help Chad’s Santa Fe-based, struggling business at the same time. There is a definite attraction from the start, but the men also connect on an intellectual level. In fact, a traumatic event causes them to be emotionally very close much faster than either of them expected. When Chad opens up about his reasons for becoming a balloon pilot and how important his business of ferrying around tourists is to him, Rusty only becomes more determined to help out.

Over the next few weeks, Rusty and Chad get to know each other, spend as much time together as possible, and develop a deep affection for each other. Theirs is not a hot flash of an affair, but rather a slow-burning one that deepens very quickly nonetheless. Both of them are older and experienced enough to realize that what they have has long-term potential, and I liked how careful and nurturing they are with each other.

If you like romances with lots of heart and emotion, if two men who bond intellectually as much as physically are your thing, and if you’re looking for a gentle love story in a beautiful New Mexico setting, then you might like this novella.
