Curious literary "tour" with biographical insights into the lives of Kerouac, Burroughs, Brautigan, Ferlinghetti, Cassady, Ginsberg, and more. Although surprised I was to learn of Jim Morrison acting in the Living Theatre's production of Paradise, I researched this myself and think it more likely he was actually just a member of the audience as it encouraged audience participation. Still, I was pleased to read and learn about the antics of some of my favourite authors, and it introduced me to even more amiable characters eg Philip Lamantia, Michael McClure, Peter Orlovsky, Kenneth Rexroth, and Philip Whalen. My dog-eared copy of this little guidebook was my constant companion in New York during my first year there. It helped me chase Kerouac's ghost around Manhattan, especially Morningside Heights, where I was living.

This is a story of one man’s struggle with life’s many cycles – intimate and nonjudgmental. Gordon takes us on a fascinating exploration of Ginsberg’s life, its many ups and downs. Despite his egotism, we get a glimpse of Ginsberg’s quasi-sainthood. Loyal and trusting, sometimes to a fault, Ginsberg’s story is also the story of all the Beat poets. Immensely readable, this book is not only a touching portrait, but a stunning tribute to a great man.

Stunning in its level of detail. I was unprepared for how thorough the book was. I went in only wanting details on Burroughs, Ginsberg and Kerouac, but I got so much more. Having had such intimate contact with the letters and journals of so many of them, Morgan has produced a very readable one-stop chronicle of this group of writers. HIGHLY recommended.
