Although I have almost memorized the entire length of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I was never that conversant with the original series. Hark! Look here. What’s this? All the Words: The Complete Monty Python’s Flying Circus (Pantheon, 1989). Danger, danger, Will Robinson. Now I can be insufferable at parties, as I quickly memorize pertinent sections of this compendium. Now I too can say “Your Majesty is like a big jam doughnut with cream on the top,” and know that the follow-up is “like a doughnut, your arrival gives us pleasure, and your departure only makes us hungry for more.” Unfortunately, All the Words is only the TV series. You have to (and can, fortunately) buy the scripts for the movies separately. If that doesn’t satisfy your need for the python of fun, check out Kim “Howard” Johnson’s The First 20 Years of Monty Python (St. Martin’s, 1989), which supplies a wonderful biography of the group as a whole, and compliments George Perry’s earlier Life of Python (Little Brown, 1983).

Brian di Nazareth, film diretto da Terry Jones, è la storia di Brian (Graham Chapman), un uomo nato in una capanna proprio accanto alla grotta in cui è venuto al mondo Gesù. I Magi, che lo scambiano per il bambinello che stanno cercando, donano alla madre (Terry Jones) i regali che hanno portato. Quando poi si accorgono dell’errore che hanno commesso, tornano subito indietro a riprenderseli. Passano trentatré anni e il giudeo Brian ascolta il discorso delle "Beatitudini" tenuto da Gesù ma, essendo troppo lontano, non riesce a capire bene quanto annunciato dal Maestro. Distratto dalle chicchere e dalle liti delle persone intorno a lui, il giovane comincia a pensare di voler dare vita a una rivoluzione sociale. Dopo aver assistito a una lapidazione, Brian entra ancora di più in crisi e, confessandosi con la madre, le rivela di sentirsi estremamente fuori posto. La donna gli spiega che le sue sensazioni hanno ragion d’essere: suo padre, infatti, era un romano.
Nonostante il giovane abbia finalmente scoperto le sue origini, decide di proclamarsi comunque ebreo. Per dimostrarlo a tutti, entra a far parte di un'organizzazione rivoluzionaria anti-imperialista, il "Fronte Popolare di Giudea", nata con l’intento di liberare la Palestina dall’invasione romana. Per metterlo alla prova, i membri del gruppo gli dicono di scrivere la frase "Romani andate a casa" sulla parete dell’edificio del governatore. Il ragazzo, però, viene sorpreso a imbrattare il muro da un legionario che, invece di fermarlo, gli corregge la grammatica latina e lo costringe a riscrivere la stessa frase, corretta, per cento volte. Brian esegue e, appena finito, scappa per non essere preso e punito. Dopo questo gesto coraggioso, se da un lato diventa un idolo agli occhi dei rivoluzionari, dall'altro comincia a essere un sorvegliato speciale per i Romani… (fonte: Coming soon)

Nato contemporaneamente a Gesù in una capanna accanto alla sua grotta, Brian viene subito scambiato dai Re Magi per il Bambino che cercano, e perciò essi offrono i loro doni alla sua petulante madre, ma accortisi subito dell'errore, tornano a riprenderseli. Trentatré anni dopo Brian, giovane giudeo, assiste da lontano al discorso delle "Beatitudini" tenuto da Gesù, ma, sia per la distanza che per le chiacchiere e le liti delle persone vicine, non riesce ad afferrare bene le parole pronunciate dal Maestro e non riesce a comprenderne appieno il significato. Eppure, in Brian cominciano a maturare nuove idee di rivalsa sociale.

As the title suggests, this two-volume set of books contains all the sketches and skits from the famous comedy troupe. Each volume has an index at the back, listing the names of each skit, with the skits that appear in the opposite volume being italicized, so the reader knows which volume to search. Lovely for browsing, and of course each sketch that I read makes me want to watch the show again!½

Most of the humor doesn't stand up to repeated watching the way the other Python movies do, and there's too much focus on a plot (decidedly a bad direction for Monty Python), but even so it's still fun to watch.

Always funny, a real mood-changer. Dirtier than we saw on PBS in the 70s.

Back in my teenage years this was one of my favourite books and it's battered and loved from reading over and over again when the shows were off air and I didn't have any videos. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

I was hoping to buy a book with sketches etc. In stead this contains only a few partial sketches (some with the punchline cut off...), some biographical info on the actors and a lot of what seem to be 'remixed' materials - such as an infographic on what a 'twit' is, which I'm sure did not exist before this book was made. All 'new' content is of equally low quality.

Two stars. One and a half for the small pieces of original material in there, and another half one for the biography's (which I didn't care for much as I just wanted the comedy, but it wasn't bad either).

If you want Monty Python, buy something like the "Just the words"/"All the Words" books, and ignore this one.

All of the sketches from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Includes some screen captures from the shows. Absolutely hilarious stuff, and helpful sometimes if you can't quite figure out what people are saying. My copy is battered, dog-eared and much loved. A classic.

"And now, for something completely different..." If any of these snippets of dialog bring a smile to your face, you probably number yourself among the millions of Monty Python fans in the world. If so, this two-volume set, The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words, is right up your alley. This is a collection of the complete scripts to all of the episodes of the classic Monty Python's Flying Circus series, including stage directions and character names (which often didn't make it onto the screen!). This is entertaining reading for both the casual viewer, and for the hard-core Python fan who wants to test their memory for Python trivia. Just remember... "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

It is quite amazing that a comedy sensation that often relies so much on slapstick can be almost as funny in script form. Though that may be because i can visualise much of what i am reading. If you are a new-comer to the Python phenomenon (and if so, where have you been for 30 years??) i suggest you watch a few episodes before cracking open this book.½

With another song, this would be really sweet. But it's just gross.½
