The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas: Stories von Davy Rothbart
First short story definitely the strongest in this collection. I'd be curious to read more from Rothbart; some of these feel like they suffer from his immaturity as a writer more than any actual faults. He's talented at getting that midwestern mood.
I think everyone can relate to at least one of the stories included here. They're all funny and read as of you're right there when they happened.
Reading Davy Rothbart's essays is like hearing from a good buddy who lives life with more adventure (and alcohol) and feels with more emotion and who always has a story to tell. His essays range from sweet ("Bigger and Deafer", about his mom) to ridiculous ("Naked in New York") to revelatory ("Tessa") to heavy ("The Strongest Man in the World").
A break-up letter written on an airplane barf bag, longing letters sent from jail, photos of happy celebrations, lots of very talented doodles and one deflated balloon with a wish tied to it that said "I wish I won't flunk sixth grade!" The book is filled with objects sent in to the author because of his Found magazine. It's a homage to humanity. Misspelled but heartfelt declarations of love and lust, notices for unusual lost items, musicians looking for a band, angry back and forths between teenagers in class, a couple that are clearly suicide notes, and notes left on windshields of people who can't park.
