Lido quase 50 anos após a sua escrita, este livro revela passagens interessantes, alguns prognósticos que se concretizaram, algumas análises que continuam pertinentes em 2024 relativamente à Federação da Rússia e também alguns disparates.
O anticomunismo do autor está bem patente sobretudo na primeira parte do livro. Não é grave porque é fruto de uma visão lúcida e fundamentada. Mais grave é adesão do mesmo autor aos dogmas putinianos expressos na obra "O colapso do Ocidente".
Apontado como aquele que previu o colapso da URSS, na verdade, este livro pelo menos, o autor não prev~e tal coisa, pelo menos não baliza temporalmente tal colapso.

Il observe des signes objectifs, comme le taux d'alphabétisation et la planification des naissances, dans de nombreux pays que l'Occident a tendance à diaboliser. Il s'agit selon lui d'une transition vers une certaine modernisation. Une vision historique à long terme est nécessaire pour faire contrepoids à la vision journalistique à court terme.

The demographic anthropology is fascinating with Catholic zombies and the EU "cadres." Tony Judt once criticized Todd for his demographic analysis but nevertheless accepted his conclusions. The conclusions of this book are troubling but need to be examined carefully. While the future is foreboding, Todd also sees the possibility of positive solutions.

Todd's book was bound to cause controversy. It appeared in its original form while feelings were still high after the killings last January. However, his critique of the emotional response and his use of demographics to breakdown and analyze the people who turned out to protest in the days after the massacre is very important.
The book is very readable and adds a lot to the debate about contemporary France, the decline of religion in general and Catholicism in particular as well as the rise of xenophobia and Islamophobia that seem to be filling the Catholic void.
The thesis is not perfect, there are a lot of presuppositions that are unproven and Todd has prejudices and blind spots of his own. There are a lot of turns of phrase that sound elegant in French but when translated into English sound clunky. There is a good book trying to escape from Todd's work, hopefully it will come along soon.½

L’historien et démographe Emmanuel Todd a publié à l’automne 2002, un essai qui avançait des idées originales, une vision lucide de la crise qui se dessinait entre le monde et les États-Unis. S’appuyant sur les données démographiques, économiques, Emmanuel Todd construit un portrait du déclin de l’Amérique cohérent et logique.

Republié en 2004 en format de poche dans la collection Folio, cet essai est écrit dans un style abordable et cohérent. Intéressant et instructif. A lire en tandem avec Le choc des civilisations de Samuel Huntington.

Utile, rapide et précis. Todd est certainement quelqu'un à lire... A aimer ou pas, autre histoire.

Réjouissant. Emmanuel Todd est toujours réjouissant. S'il n'avait eu plusieurs fois raison contre tous (chute de l'URSS, transition arabe), on le prendrait volontiers pour un rigolo, un matamore sympathique de la démo-histoire. J'avais lu son livre de 2007, "Le rendez-vous des civilisations", où il prédisait la démocratisation des sociétés arabes au vu de la baisse de la fécondité et de la hausse du taux d'alphabétisation : j'en étais sorti (séduit mais) sceptique. Par ailleurs, il ne s'agit que d'un tout petit livre d'entretiens.½

En lisant cet ouvrage près de 10 ans après sa parution, on se rend compte que ses analyses tiennent toujours : la démocratie (et le contrôle des naissances) suit l'alphabétisation (voir printemps arabe), les veilles démocraties se transforment en oligarchies, les Etats-Unis inquiets car complètement dépendants du reste du monde.

Yhdysvallat muistuttaa Toddin mielestä luhistuvaa Rooman valtakuntaa, joka kuluttaa enemmän kuin tuottaa. Toddin mielestä Yhdysvallat tarvitsee käytännössä raha-apua pitääkseen nykyisen kulutustasonsa. Yhdysvallat on heikentyvä talousmahti, joka nykyisellään estää muun maailman talouskehitystä. Yhdysvallat ei ole imperiumi, joka levittäisi hyvinvointia ympärilleen. Yhdysvaltojen sotilaallista suorituskykyä ei testattu, sillä amerikkalaisten sotilasoperaatiot ovat kohdistuneet sellaisia johtajia tai valtioita vastaan, jotka ovat muutenkin olleet romahtamaisillaan. Ylipäätään USA:n politiikka muistuttaa humalaisen hoipertelua.

Uutisista tutut amerikkalaiset talousskandaalit ovat oire syvistä ongelmista, kapitalismi Yhdysvalloissa on vaikeuksissa. Toddin mukaan amerikkalainen markkinatalous ei tuota enää hyödykkeitä, vaan valuuttaa. Maaginen dollari pitää Yhdysvaltoja pystyssä, mutta jatkossa USA:n elintaso putoaa ja merkitys pienenee. Eurooppa tekee viisaasti kehittäessään yhteistyötä demokratisoituvan Venäjän kanssa. Myös useat Afrikan ja Lähi-idän valtiot rauhoittuvat ajan myötä. Todd perustelee näkemystään sillä, että lukutaidon leviäminen merkitsee syntyvyyden säännöstelyä, mikä tuo mukanaan olojen vakiintumisen.

Kirjan ansiot: Todd esittää mielenkiintoisen analyysin kansainvälisestä politiikasta. Hän perustelee näkemyksiään väestötieteellisillä ja taloudellisilla tilastoilla.

Pour mon plus grand malheur (enfin, surtout celui de mes proches), j’ai développé depuis une quinzaine d’années un intérêt prononcé pour la politique française. Tiens, depuis que j’ai récupéré ma nationalité française, en fait… C’est pour cela que j’ai acheté le dernier ouvrage d’Emmanuel Todd, Après la démocratie.

Au début, j’ai eu un peu peur de tomber sur un énième pamphlet; comme je l’avais déjà expliqué sur l’ancien blog avec les derniers ouvrages de François Ruffin et Philippe Val, j’ai de plus en plus de mal avec les pamphlétaires. Dans le cas présent, si l’ouvrage d’Emmanuel Todd commence par une charge en règle contre Nicolas Sarkozy, son être et son action, ça ne dure heureusement pas.

Emmanuel Todd prend comme base ce portrait à charge et pose que l’élection d’un tel individu à la présidence française n’est pas un accident, mais le symptôme d’un mal plus profond. S’appuyant sur des données historiques et anthropologiques, il s’efforce de détailler les contraintes et les tiraillements de la société française actuelle.

Le constat final est inquiétant: la France – comme d’ailleurs d’autres nations en Europe et dans le monde – a un gros problème avec ses élites. Au cours des deux dernière décennies, en gros, celles-ci sont devenues autonomes au point de pouvoir composer une société auto-suffisante et narcissique au sein du reste de la nation. Coupées des réalités et alimentées par leurs propres idéologies, ces élites sont de plus en plus en porte à faux avec les électeurs.

Qu’on soit d’accord ou non avec les conclusions de l’ouvrage, Après la démocratie propose une analyse convaincante et sans concession de la société française actuelle. Le livre se lit vite et fournit des armes intellectuelles très intéressantes pour ceux que la politique de l’omniprésident français irrite.

Maintenant, pour les autres, ni moi ni Emmanuel Todd ne pouvons plus rien pour vous.½

Pretty persuasive- it does make sense out of some of the weirdnesses we've seen lately in America's foreign policy, and it's recommended on that count.

I will mention that Todd seems to have some serious issues with women; the only real vitriol in the entire book is aimed at American women and particularly feminists. He is very comfortable with the idea of men oppressing women (cultural diversity!), but not at all comfortable about women objecting to being oppressed (apparently cultural diversity does not extend THAT far!).

Also, based on current trends in France about the wearing of burqas etc., he is dead wrong about how tolerant France is about seeing such as a purely cultural matter; this is relevant since he's holding up France (he's French) as a Good Example of how America OUGHT to be (i.e., tolerant of the oppression of women, apparently). He also turns a blind eye to other racial and cultural prejudices in France, while coming down hard on such things in the US.

Dans cet essai passionnant, Emmanuel Todd montre comment nos représentants politiques sont devenus le miroir de la décomposition qui nous accable, miroirs du vide idéologique et des dérives qui travaillent l'ensemble de la société française : respect des forts, mépris des faibles, amour de l'argent, désir d'inégalité, besoin d'agression, vertige narcissique, désignation de boucs émissaires... Le président est la preuve que la société est malade, explique brillamment Emmanuel Todd, en montrant comment la fragmentation sociale de la société, la stagnation éducative et la fin de l'ascenseur social favorisent l'individualisme. Dans ce véritable brulot, dont Sarkozy est l'emblème, Todd met à mon avis l'accent sur la panne du système éducatif qui a créé une société fragmentée, avec 1/3 d'individus certes éduqués, culturellement exigeants, mais économiquement de plus en plus coincés. Il montre, touche après touche, comment l'éducation est devenue un facteur de segmentation et d'oppression plus que d'émancipation. Il dénonce enfin l'autre maladie qui tue notre démocratie explique-t-il, l'oligarchie qui nous gouverne. Passionnant...

A glimmer of hope when i first read it, back then in the so distant now 2001. Here was a historian who had seen through all the hype about the US, and while they were menacing us with global shock and awe, he shouted that the king was naked. And explained it in clear language. And even earlier, was the only one to predict USSR's demise, based on arguments drawn from historical demography. His minor flaws, like a certain macho attitude and conservative politics, seemed trivial then to me. Must be read.

An Anthropological Explanation of Ideology?, September 19, 2004

An amazing book that is, unfortunately, very difficult to find. Todd provides an anthropological definition of family structures and shows how many ideological structures have mapped, with remarkable precision, to certain family structures. There are seven definable family types, which are defined by attitudes towards spouse selection, attitudes towards symmetry in family/social (inheritance & law) relations, and attitudes towards whether married children can live at home. Spouse selection within these families can be decided by custom - usually the preference is cousins - or parents, or the two getting married are free to decide. Laws of inheritance can be egalitarian, non-egalitarian or indifferent. That is the inheritance is either divided equally between all - in practice this usually means all sons, or divided unequally - one son only receives the patrimony, or any which way you please. These family types are defined as follows:

1. Absolute Nuclear Family:
a. Spouse selection: Free, but obligatory exogamy.
b. Inheritance: Indifference - no precise rules, frequent use of wills.
c. Family Home: no cohabitation of married children with their parents.
d. Representative Nations, Peoples, Regions: Anglo-Saxon world, Holland, Denmark.
e. Representative Ideology: Christianity, Capitalism, `Libertarian' Liberalism, and Feminism.

2. Egalitarian Nuclear Family:
a. Spouse selection: Free, but obligatory exogamy.
b. Inheritance: Egalitarian - equality between brothers.
c. Family Home: no cohabitation of married children with their parents.
d. Representative Nations, Regions: northern France, northern Italy, central & southern Spain, central Portugal, Greece, Romania, Poland, Latin America, Ethiopia.
e. Representative Ideology: Christianity (Catholicism); the "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" form of Liberalism.

3. Authoritarian Family:
a. Spouse selection: Parents, little or no marriage between children of brothers.
b. Inheritance: Anti-Egalitarian - inequality between brothers, transfer of patrimony to one son.
c. Family Home: cohabitation of the married heir with his parents.
d. Representative Nations, Peoples, Regions: Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Bohemia, Scotland, Ireland, peripheral regions of France, northern (Basque) Spain, northern Portugal, Japan, Korea, Jews, Romany Gypsies.
e. Representative Ideology: Fascism, various separatist and autonomous (anti-universalist) movements.

4: Exogamous Community Family:
a. Spouse selection: Parents, no marriage between the children of two brothers.
b. Inheritance: Egalitarian - equality between brothers.
c. Family Home: cohabitation of married sons with their parents.
d. Representative Nations, Regions: Russia, Yugoslavia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Finland, Albania, central Italy, China, Vietnam, Cuba and north India.
e. Representative Ideology: Communism, Socialism.

5. Endogamous Community Family:
a. Spouse selection: Custom, frequent marriage between the children of brothers.
b. Inheritance: Egalitarian - equality between brothers.
c. Family Home: cohabitation of married sons with their parents.
d. Representative Nations, Peoples, Regions: Arab world, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan.
e. Representative Ideology: Islam.

6. Asymmetrical Community Family:
a. Spouse selection: Custom, prohibition on marriages between the children of brothers, but a preference for marriages between the children of brothers and sisters.
b. Inheritance: Egalitarian - equality between brothers.
c. Family Home: cohabitation of married sons with their parents.
d. Representative Regions: southern India.
e. Representative Ideology:

7: Anomic Family:
a. Spouse selection: Free, but without obligatory exogamy; consanguine marriage possible and sometimes frequent.
b. Inheritance: Indifference - uncertainty about equality between brothers, inheritance rules egalitarian in theory but uncertain in practice.
c. Family Home: cohabitation of married children with parents rejected in theory but accepted in practice.
d. Representative Nations, Peoples, Regions:
e. Representative Ideology: Buddhism, Christianity, and Communism, but potentially anything.

This translation dates from 1985 though it was published earlier in that decade in France. He predicts the fall of the Soviet Union because the satellite states (like Poland) and internal (Moslem) `satellite states' will prove non-absorbable. He also predicts that the USA Islam were heading towards conflict because of, in large part, Anglo-Saxon feminism. The predictive power of this anthropological approach is also visible in the deep anti-universalism of the authoritarian family. The gypsies, for instance, refuse to be absorbed by other cultures even though they have no identifiable ideological commitments. Naturally, in this short note I cannot bring out all the insights, originality and subtlety of the text, though he does leave the impression that family structure can explain everything - it can't. ...Still, this text is well worth hunting down.
