An interesting read. A collection of 13 essays with topics ranging from race, sexuality, and feminism. Okay so Beyonce is the focal point of this book. Who doesn't know who she is and what she is famous for??!! She is mainstream...she is out there...she is loved by many. So it really is a great concept to create a book such as this and get us to see viewpoints of all these topics with Beyonce in mind. If I am not mistaken there are other books like this with another very well known person...and if I am correct then I am definitely interested to read that one as well. I enjoyed this book...easy to get through and very much food for thought.… (mehr)

This book is a collection of 13 essays on sexuality, race and feminism with the entertainer BEYONCE as an example of how these subjects affect others.
Because she is looked at with both praise and criticism, we get to look at the essays themselves to make our own decisions about her . Beyonce is considered detrimental to feminism and representing a negative image of women of color, and others see her as an icon of female empowerment. If you want to read about the world's biggest pop star, this is the book for you. Topics include the body policies of respectability; feminism, empowerment and gender in Beyonce's lyrics, black female pleasure and the changing face of celebrity motherhood. I recommend this to anyone interested in today's star, and especially with her upcoming birth of twins.… (mehr)

I found this book to give an interesting look into such a popular cultural icon. This book was well researched and provided an interesting insight into Beyonce and her life. The collection of essays provided were an interesting read. Truly worth a read but i found myself having to re read certain parts as the information started to feel like it was a regurgitation. 3 stars from me.

If you're interested in a close look at gender, race, and pop culture, you should read 'The Beyonce Effect'. The essays are as complex and nuanced as the topics they tackle, raising probing questions about what it means to be feminist and how Beyonce tackles the often conflicting demands placed on Black women in general and on Black women in the music industry in particular. I'm also looking forward to hearing what these scholars have to say about Lemonade.
