I know LT already has a feature to show the most popular books by title and author, but those lists represent the most common titles or authors, whereas the purpose of this group is to create lists of our favorites. Hopefully, the LT programming wizards will later find a way to mine the data and compile a single list for each category.

I don't like to say "in no particular order" but even if I'm quite positive about who are my #1 to #4 after that...

well:
1.Fiodor Dostoievski
2.Virginia Woolf
3.E.M. Forster
4.John Steinbeck
5.Franz Kafka
6.Emile Zola
7.Marcel Proust
8.Kurt Vonnegut
9.Thomas Pynchon
10.Margaret Atwood

This is a little easier to attempt in order...

1 Virginia Woolf
2 Gertrude Stein
3 Jeanette Winterson
4 Edith Wharton
5 E.M. Forster
6 Jane Austen
7 Iris Murdoch
8 F Scott Fitzgerald
9 George Eliot
10 Albert Camus

A playwright or two would have made my list, but perhaps they require a topic of their own...

Thomas Hardy
Henry James
Margaret Atwood
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Yukio Mishima
Umberto Eco
Salman Rushdie
Vladmir Nabokov
Marcel Proust
Nathaniel Hawthorne

i think the subject is the 10 authors you would have to read on a desert island. to-wit:

1. John Dann MacDonald.
2. John Irving.
3. Ernest Hemingway.
4. Mark Twain.
5. Stephen King.
6. Dean Koontz.
7. John Steinbeck,
8. Ray Bradbury.
9. Robert Heinlein.
10. Harry Crews.

I'd try to sneak some William Shakespeare, the Beowulf, and a King James Version in the package if at all possible.

Hmmm... I'll have to go for "re-readability," a certain minimum number of titles (no telling how long till we return from our three-hour cruise), and some authors whom I've liked but who have written numerous books that I haven't read yet:

1. Gene Wolfe
2. Guy Gavriel Kay
3. Ursula K. LeGuin
4. Michael Connelly
5. Italo Calvino
6. Elmore Leonard
7. Peter Taylor
8. Don DeLillo
9. Salman Rushdie
10. Jane Austen
