Over the past twenty years, more than 15,000 members of the U.S. armed forces have died in on-duty mishaps - compared with fewer than 1,000 killed by enemy action. But when such accidents occur, the military imposes a rigid code of silence. I know Al from my USAF flight safety days. He is spot on in his criticism of the central failure of the military's accident investigation methodology: that high-ranking officers control the process and manipulate it to cover up embarrassing information or to protect the crooked contractors they plan to go to work for after retirement. Al is somewhat alarmist, however, about the day-to-day dangers of military aviation. ( )
