On a bright June morning, Sam Dalton's world suddenly crumbles as he learns that his four-year-old daughter, Jessica, has contracted a mysterious disease. Her internal organs are slowly shutting down, one by one, and her doctors are unable to even pinpoint the cause, never mind find a cure. With weary shakes of their heads, they give her less than a month to live.A chance meeting with a terrifying bleeding-eyed vagrant offers a despairing Sam a possible solution ... but at what price?A tale of love and consequences by the author of 'Riverwatch' and 'Heretic'.… (mehr)

Sam Dalton lost his wife and is now on the verge of losing his daughter to an incurable illness of unknown origin (although maybe we can figure out the source considering what happens in the book). Add to that he has apparently lost his faith in God and is willing to switch teams if it will mean that his daughter will be spared, even if it means killing innocent people in the process. A big price for a bigger payoff, right?

Why don't people ever remember that the Devil never plays fair?

A very short but powerful depiction of a man who has lost it all learning that it is still possible to make a bad situation much worse. ( )

As other reviewers have said, this story is about a recent widower, Sam, whose daughter is dying. To what steps will he go to save her from a horribly painful death? The answer is he'll go pretty darn far.

You can feel the torture Sam is going through and you want to back him in his vow to do whatever it takes, but you can't help recoiling as he actually does it!
This is a gory one, with an ending that is hard to forsee, but I think it was worth the trip down into the dark. ( )
