Semonche (read 1 Feb 1984) This is a chronological story of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1890 to 1920. I really enjoyed reading the book, even though the scheme of the book is simplistic--it just tells what the Court did year by year. Surprising how I remembered the cases I had in law school when they came up in this account. In general, the author's theory is that the Court wasn't as benighted during those years as it is sometimes pictured to have been. Interesting if not memorable reading. This study concludes that the Court generally harmonized the demands of society with the Constitution, a process that resulted in modernizing the law to make it serviceable in the twentieth century. Based on consideration of all the cases decided in the era, Semonche explains how the Court operated and how it was inevitably drawn into the task of making substantial policy choices.
