It was cute, but I bit boring. ( )

This series was supposed to be 5 volumes, but was put on indefinite hiatus after volume 3, so I never bothered to read past volume 1.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this series. It seems like it's going to be an examination of what affects Shiroyama's translucency. I quite like the fact that Tadami is not a school superstar. In fact, the other students recognise him only as "that guy who hangs around Shiroyama." Even the introduction of Okouchi didn't include any petty jealousy that is so common in school manga stories. I think this was a cute story. The idea was good, and the romance between the two characters adorable. A nice, steady storyline without much weirdness in it. I look foreward to reading the next book. ( )

A coming of age story that uses the concept of a “disease” that actually turns one invisible as a metaphor for for the introverted main character's feelings about herself and the way society sees her. Not usually a sweet (straight ^_^) romance person, but I decided to try this one out since it sounded interesting. Thought I did somewhat expect this to be more personal development focused than romantic development focused, the romance is even more to the side than I expected, just another of the relationships in the main characters' life that make her feel happier and give her more confidence. Initially I was impressed by the way the manga handled itself, both with light humor and gravity when appropriate (rather than the irritating angst you see in some series). I admit I came in to the series expecting to see something possibly interesting but not necessarily something I would want to follow long term as it just wasn't my usual kind of story. As I read the first chapter, I was already beginning to consider the distinct possibility I may actually truly enjoy reading not only an entire volume of this, but subsequent volumes as well. It was understated...a tinge sweet and romantic...a tinge lonesome...I liked it.

This felling continued on into the second chapter, which was rather a stock sort of situation (comparison of the shy girl no one sees to the beautiful popular girl everyone pays attention to, and how they are similar/envy each other), but not really bad... Only then the next chapter was a different stock situation...and the next after that..and...well, yeah. They weren't exactly bad, but now knowing that this manga was going to go by the old formulas, my interest rather faded away.

This is definitely interesting, and I find it a lot more tolerable than a lot of shoujo (yeah, it's actually seinen. But it would appeal to females who like shoujo as well, I think). The art is fairly pleasant to look at but not great, the characters mostly sweet, simple little embodiments of childhood archetypes (shy girl, slightly stupid happy-go-lucky boy, all-around-amazing-and-beautiful girl) who always say just the right thing to make the other feel better. But despite this, the manga handles itself with a maturity that makes the experience interesting. For me, though, taking this exploration of...I suppose the anonymity we often feel in our lives, and chopping it up in to stock, easily digestible chunks takes away some of that respectability and maturity, some of the interesting directions it could have gone. It's still worth a try if you find the idea interesting, though, and if you don't have as much of an aversion to the episodic stories, you could very well find yourself looking for later volumes. ( )

The cast of characters are all basically good-natured and surround the protagonists like a warm blanket, and the mood is mellow and optimistic, making Translucent more similar to Love Roma (minus the sex) than anything else in translation.
