The quite readable account of the origin of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. Norwich is a clear stylist, and the "Other Conquest" (I believe it to be the USA title) rolls along nicely. ( )

Omdat hij na zijn eerste reis naar Sicilië in 1961 geen boeken vond die de geschiedenis van de Normandiërs in Zuid-Italië beschreven, besloot Norwich dan maar om er zelf een te schrijven. Het werd een tweeluik van bijzonder interessante en vlot toegankelijke boeken over de uitzonderlijke onderneming waarbij een aanvankelijk kleine groep van Normandische ridders geleidelijk Apulië en Calabrië wisten te veroveren en even later zelfs Sicilië aan de moorse dominantie wisten te onttrekken. Drie figuren treden daarbij prominent op de voorgrond. Robert Guiscard (1015-1085) en een van diens jongere broers Roger I (1031-1101) vormen vooral de hoofdpersonages van het boek "The Normans in the South'. Roger II (1095-1154) die het tot eerste koning van Sicilië weet te brengen, komt pas op het einde van dit boek naar voor maar zal in het tweede boek "The Kingdom in the Sun" het vertrekpunt worden van de innemende, verhalende schrijfstijl van Norwich.
Sicilië is nog steeds een parel van de Middellandse Zee en een smeltkroes van culturen. Norwich heeft het wel voor dit prachtige eiland maar laat zijn eigen oordeel over de gevoerde politiek, de onderlinge conflicten en oorlogen toch zelden doorklinken. Maar ik kan hem wel volmondig onderschrijven wanneer hij het hoofdstuk over Roger I, graaf van Sicilië afsluit. "While the rest of the continent, with a ridiculous combination of cynical self-interest and woolly-headed idealism, exhausted and disgraced itself on a Crusade, he -who alone among European leaders had learnt from his own experience the vanity of the crusading spirit- had created a climate of enlightened political an religious thinking in which all races, creeds, languages and cultures were equally encouraged and favoured. Such a phenomenon, unparalleled in the Middle Ages, is rare enough at any time; and the example which Count Roger of Sicily set Europe in the eleventh century might still profitably be followed by most nations in the world today." (p. 278-279). En dan te weten dat Norwich dit al schreef in 1967. ( )

Bien escrito, agil la histora de como un grupo de mercenarios terminó siendo un reino y de los más interesantes de europa en el medioevo. Su continuidad hubiera cambiado parte de la historia, ya que la tesis de Norwich de que habian empezado a unir las tres culturas resulta interesante. Uno lo lee como una novela de aventuras ( )
