I was not impressed with Magel's Daughter. I think it was mainly because a lot of the characters were simply unlikable and unrelatable. Dysfunctional families I can understand on some level, but when the kids seem to have more common sense than adults at a very young age, I start to wonder exactly what point of family dynamics Baker was trying to make. It is touted as a dark comedy, but I found nothing funny about a mother's selfishness, a husband's abusiveness, accepted(?)incest, and mental breakdowns. It's hardly a lesson in psychologically damaged persons because no one seems to know how broken they really are and seem to surround themselves with people they can blame and point fingers at without taking that good hard look at themselves. It would have made more sense if at least one character had the fortitude to stop and say, "Wait, what's really the problem here?" I'm sorry that it didn't happen. I had hoped that Daughter would have gotten better as the story went on, that at some point our main character, Karin, would see how repulsive and self-centered her actions really were and grow, but again, no it didn't happen. At this point, I can honestly say that Magel's Ghost will not be on my TBR list. It's just too much drama, not enough resolution.… (mehr)

MAGEL'S GHOST by Nancy Baker is an intersting paranormal romance set in Minnesota. It is the sequel to "Magel's Daughter". It has romance,,magical realism, romance, a bit of insanity,
ghosts, intrigue, and a bit of humor." This is the story of keeping a Norwegian family's genealogy pure. It continues the story of Karin from "Magel's Daughter". It is a dark, sometimes humorous story of the destructive psychosis of Karin and the men caught in her web with Hagan, her demented cousin,as her assistant. Combination of dark humor with paranormal romance. A new twist on the paranormal. If you enjoy paranormal, fantasy, ghosts, twists, turns, bits of humor, romance you will enjoy "Magel's Ghost". An interesting twist to paranormal romance. Received for review. Details can be found at North Star Press of St.Cloud,Inc. and My Book Addiction Reviews… (mehr)

This novel is unusual, however, fans of paranormal romance will appreciate it. Karin, the main character, is tortured by the Olina women-her deceased relatives. Karin sees them and is forced to put up with them when they decide to live in her townhouse. No one in her family appears exempt from the madness. Marit has an eerie and deadly fascination with body parts, Magel kept body parts in the freezer, etc... So it is not surprising when Karin exhibits signs of insanity as well.

After her wild and crazy romance with Leo, Karin takes up with James to complete this crazy series with a bang. She meets the wealthy Minneapolis family and becomes the lover of the grandfather, father, and son. The scenes vary from downright eerie to incredibly humorous-involving a tail in one scene. Karin continues spiralling into insanity with the reader following her unfortunate destructive events. She is not actually a character the reader can love or hate. She's more of a "the reader can't believe this is actually happening, even in a novel" type of character.

This novel is recommended for adults who enjoy paranormal romance tinged with insanity.

At the start I was intrigued by the book and thought it would be a quirky look at family dysfunction but as the book wore on it seemed as if parts were included just to shock or disgust. A story of true and complete family dysfunction the book quickly became almost unbearable in its frequent discussion of incest. The main character became more and more unlikeable. The plot became little more than a way to shock readers instead of telling a story. Would not recommend
