Abel Bac is a police officer with an impeccable twenty-year service record, no known vices and no private life to speak of. But he does seem to have a weak spot in the distant recesses of his adolescent memories, and there's someone out there who knows about it and is pressing on it hard, putting Abel's mental health — and his career — in peril. Not such an unusual scenario for a crime story, perhaps, except that the torture is inflicted in this case by means of highly sophisticated conceptual art installations, which all seem to be riffing in obscure fashion off a La Fontaine fable.

As a crime story it's a bit too straightforward and tightly plotted, without much room for mystery and unexpected twists, but it works well as a straight novel. The knowing send-up of the modern-art world and the unusual and relatively cliché-free personalities of the two main characters are enough to keep you interested, even if Abel's colleague Camille is a bit too much the obvious Siobhan to his (low-alcohol) Rebus.½

De cover van dit boek is prachtig én geeft ineens al een inkijkje in het verhaal. Hoewel Frida bekend staat om haar kleurrijke schilderijen en flamboyante verschijning is er ook een donkere kant in haar leven; haar pijn en haar af-aan relatie met haar grote liefde Diego Rivera.

Twee dominante kunstenaars bij elkaar: dat geeft vonken. En die vonken geeft Berest prachtig weer in deze roman die schippert tussen dagboek-, documentaire- en filmachtig. We maken kennis met de jonge Frida die stiekem naar Diego gaat kijken als hij een muurschildering staat te maken, we zijn bij hun eerste ontmoeting, bij Frida’s busongeluk, terwijl ze schildert, huwt, scheidt én terug huwt. We blijven bij haar, tot na haar dood.

Frida vloekt, zuipt, heeft minnaars en minnaressen, ze huilt, ze lacht, ze schildert. Niets is zwart geeft een volledig beeld van Kahlo; geen gecensureerde sprookjesversie. Dat maakt dit boek beter dan de rest. Berest schrijft zoals Kahlo schildert: kleurrijk, vloeiend, zwierig, urgent en bruisend.

Fans van Frida gaan van dit boek smullen, lezers van dit boek gaan van Frida houden!

Fascinée par Frida Khalo, Claire Berest présente le roman « Rien n’est noir » sur sa vie commune avec Diego Riviera. Jeune fille, éprise de liberté et de soif de vivre, est victime d’un accident qui la laisse handicapée et douloureuse.

Devant ses peintures, non seulement le « Mastodonde Riviera » ne résiste pas mais les cicatrices de la jeune fille le retiennent plus que d’habitude, ses excès, sa liberté, son effronterie et sa soif aussi.
Mais à 20 ans, on aime d’amour à mort.
