Rare are the times when a book fails to struck a chord in me. This book was such a time.

"The name of the Wind" is a novel that never converges into an idea; a narrative which never comes to fruition. It is very much like a simple sequence of events, occasionally punctuated with the promise of an epic character. Kvothe, while an interesting character, never becomes more than the orphan slightly puzzled by his parents death. And yet, by the end, it is as a famous(nearly fabled) adventurer and fighter that we are asked to see the character as.

The book is well written and enjoyable, and at times, the narrative is genuinely inventive and engrossing, but the stories serve to create a character which is not the one we are promised in the beginning chapters, and I can't shake the feeling that the book I wanted to read begins where this one ends.

Perhaps this is simply a parted work and the following books offer what this one lacks, but for this reader it simply won't do.… (mehr)
