Sanping Chen

Many of the allegedly "astonishing discoveries" in this book --that the Chinese unicorn is very unlike the western one, that the Tang Dynasty had strong barbarian connections, etc. are hardly new (some are in Arthur Waley), but Chen does pro vide serious scholarly arguments to answer other Chinese scholars who tend to downplay the strong Central Asian and Iranian influences in Tang culture.
