I'm not a Christian. I've only read the so-called synoptic gospels. I have no expertise in this area, just some interest. The book seemed to be a well-argued and logical proposition, not some wacky tirade. I found the evidence presented fascinating, particularly the reminders to evaluate the bible keeping in mind when its parts were written and what the authors could have known about Jesus himself and what others had written about him (or, in the case of Paul, hadn't written about him yet).

The author (whom we know from Nailed) is referred to as a writer and historical researcher. The book is fascinating, but it does sometimes seem a little disorganized and it has long quotes from the academic workers in this field that can be distracting (you may ask yourself, why don't I just read Dr. Carrier?). For the same reason, I think this could have been published as one volume. Fitzgerald does do a nice job of summarizing a lot of work on this topic and presenting it in an easily digestible form. I think I may hold off on volumes II and III, since I was convinced long ago that Hercules was not a real person and that if someone starts telling you about a haunted house, the eyewitness will usually be their cousin's friend.… (mehr)

This is an absolutely devastating critique of the mormon church. It boldly shines a light into those dark corners of mormon history that the church has done its best to deny and hide. Including: Joseph Smith's conviction for fraud (using the same stone and hat that he used to "translate" the Book of Mormon), Joseph Smith's marriage to a 14 year old, his polygamy, the various accounts of his 'first vision', the murderous danites, the mountain meadows massacre, the temple 'ceremonies' taken from the free masons, and much, much more. I look forward to more books in this series and hope that [a:David Fitzgerald|4438766|David Fitzgerald|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] adds many more religions to his critical eye.… (mehr)

I came across this book while perusing the shelves at my local library. It was the title that caught my attention; the word "time" on any book shelved in the science fiction section will always attract my interest. After giving it a quick scan, I decided to give it a try.

Two hours later, I find myself wondering what better use I might have made of that time.

To be fair, Dana Fredsti and David Fitzgerald's book isn't the worst book that I've ever read. It is, however, incredibly derivative, tossing together elements from two or three different (and better) sci-fi novels and rushing the reader through with nonstop action in the hope that if the pacing is fast enough said reader won't ask too many questions. Given the dual authors, this is probably the first book I have ever read with a Mary Sue and a Gary Stu in it, the latter of which isn't well disguised by the clumsy red herring thrown into the narrative. The whole thing ends up feeling like a treatment for a movie made for the SyFy channel, with every plot point hitting its sadly predictable beat. The closer I got to the end, the more I found myself thinking, "Please don't be the first book in a series. Please don't be the first book in a series. please don't be the first book in a series."

Then I got to the end and, sure enough, it's the first book in a series.

Oh, well, at least it proved a quick read.
