Suzanne Guillette

The ending of this book redeemed it for me. Up to the end I kept thinking, "I just don't really like this book. The author is a stupid girl who keeps doing the same stupid things and then wondering why she is so unhappy." And then, at the end, Ms. Guillette got real and suddenly I had a lot more empathy and compassion for her period of being lost (and, incidentally, embarrassed). I'm not sure what I expected, but this book is about a young woman trying to figure out how to be a real grown-up, not just a student or a girlfriend or a "writer", but someone authentic. And sometimes that takes hitting rock bottom (metaphorically speaking). Maybe if I had had this expectation going into the book, I would have enjoyed it better. But when I read blurbs like "hysterically funny" and "delightful, laugh-out-loud ride through some really embarrassing stories" - I guess I just wasn't expecting something that I found rather painful to read.… (mehr)
