What we love about the who was series is it gives a age appropriate overview of events and people without being too in-depth for younger readers. I find these are a great series for elementary aged kids to provide a foundation. This one eluded to some of the injustices the Navajo people faced but my older kids definitely wanted more detail of the code talkers story. But I think a good jumping off nonfiction book does leave someone wanting to know more so it worked for us.

Born the eighth of seventeen children in Philadelphia, Betsy Ross lived in a time when the American colonies were yearning for independence from British rule. Ross worked as a seamstress and was eager to contribute to the cause, making tents and repairing uniforms when the colonies declared war. By 1779 she was filling cartridges for the Continental Army. Did she sew the first flag? That’s up for debate, but Who Was Betsy Ross? tells the story of a fierce patriot who certainly helped create the flag of a new nation.

A solid graphic novel biography of the life of Muhammad Ali. I'm not really in love with the narrators, child versions of uncle sam and lady liberty, but I did like that they stayed solidly in Ali's corner, even when he was fighting for his right to conscientiously object to Vietnam. It's a fairly complicated story, explained well, with a lot of respect for Ali throughout. I loved that as much as his story centers on fighting, he's also clearly a person of integrity, which was a consistent message.

Solid bio of Venus and Serena Williams. They are clearly magnificent athletes, who have won many things.

Solid short biography of Jesse Owens. I like the images selected, and I think the book does a fair job chronicling both his triumphs and his missteps.

I think it's wonderful to see a short biography of Pele for younger kids, but this one just didn't do it for me. A little too choppy, a little too focused on the soccer and not on either his controversies or his big achievements -- they are mostly mentioned, but they don't sing out.

Though much of his early life remains a mystery, Blackbeard most likely began his life as Edward Teach in the sailing port of Bristol, England. He began his career as a hired British sailor during Queen Anne’s War. He eventually settled in the Bahamas under Captain Benjamin Hornigold who taught the young sailor to go "a-pirating." Soon enough, Blackbeard was commanding his own fleet and stealing ships around the Caribbean and up and down the Eastern seaboard. Known for his thick, black beard and fearsome reputation, the legend of Blackbeard has influenced pirate legend and lore for over 300 years.

I liked this book for its drawings, and writing style. This book had great visuals. When the info is facts, it can be hard to grasp everything the author says, but the visuals or the artist’s portraits of the people and what they really look like is a good way to solidify a message and meaning with the reader. This was done in a fun way, to show what the person really looked like to the reader.

The information was put out in a story so it was fun to read i got new information. I got loads of info about Jesse Owens. Every time Jesse got gold Hitler would leave because he was an African-American, and Jesse kept on winning. He even broke a few records.

This book was very thought out and detailed. It gives facts about the Moon's phases, Apollo missions to the Moon, and many other things. The text was a good level of challenge while still having the information be the focus. I like this book because it will challenge a reader with vocabulary but it also gives lots of support. I could use this when teaching about the moon. I could even have one of the sections be for one day because there is so much information through out. For example, one day could be done just on phases of the moon.

What it talks about in the beginning was how their family was poor and how their father started to teach them tennis. Venus was the second youngest and Serena was the youngest also when Venus played her first match Serena was still practicing with her father. In the middle it started talking about Venus winning game after game and Serena was just starting. They were so good that their father wanted them to train with a more advanced coach so, they moved to Florida to get a better coach. Also when serena was 15 she was playing in her sisters division just a different level. They were also playing in tournaments outside of the US. Serena and had started to play with another person. Serena also had won 3 “ Grand Slams already.

Lastly Venus and Serena got injured also started to play on the same team then the people in the crowd got angry. In the match before Venus was supposed to play Serena she injured her knee so, she couldn’t play. The crowd started to get angry so because that was the big match they came to see Serena v.s. Venus even though Serena lost before. After that, things got even worse and after they got better Serena went back to the place where all those people got mad at them with Venus and Serena beats Venus and that year serena won her fourth grand slam. Also they kept on winning their games together. By the time Serena was better from her injury Venus stopped and started a fashion line called Eleven also, Serena went to Africa and teaches kids how to play tennis.

Who were the Wright Brothers? They were high school dropouts but the creators of many. From their own bicycle brand to the first successful airplane. The two men were from Dayton, Ohio and as kids they already loved building and anything mechanical really. Oh yeah, I forgot, their names were Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. Anyways, as basically teenagers, they gained valuable skills essential for their success in printing presses, bicycles, motors, and any sort of machinery that they could possibly reach for. As adults, the two worked together to invent the world's first successful flying airplane!
The two brothers are quite remarkable! I mean it's truly incredible to me how they were able to build things successfully such as bicycles and especially airplanes (that fly). I honestly decided to read this "who was" book because I never even heard about the Wright brothers. So I said why not and checked it out. These books, they never disappoint!
