I did not have the opportunity to read the first novel in this series, but I believe that the plot, characters and places are defined clearly enough for this novel to stand on its own.

Although the storyline features four generations of women, chapters written from multiple points of view, flashbacks and other narrative devices, I found the plot to be formulaic and the characters lacking in depth. With the possible exception of Abigail, the elderly mother figure, each character seems one-dimensional, defined only by a handful of idiosyncrasies and behaviors from which they do not deviate. Unfortunately, one reasonably well-actualized character is not enough to make this a favorite book for me, but it is a pleasant, light read.

The Bookshop Hotel tells the story of AJ, a young widow. She inherits an old hotel and goes about renovating it and turning it into a bookshop/hotel. It is a very interesting premise.

AJ is a bit over her head and hires a partner in Matthew. He renovates the hotel and helps out in general. But can they be actual partners?

The book is very short, and I would have liked for the romance to be a bit more fleshed out, but overall it's a cute book.… (mehr)
