I did not have the opportunity to read the first novel in this series, but I believe that the plot, characters and places are defined clearly enough for this novel to stand on its own.

Although the storyline features four generations of women, chapters written from multiple points of view, flashbacks and other narrative devices, I found the plot to be formulaic and the characters lacking in depth. With the possible exception of Abigail, the elderly mother figure, each character seems one-dimensional, defined only by a handful of idiosyncrasies and behaviors from which they do not deviate. Unfortunately, one reasonably well-actualized character is not enough to make this a favorite book for me, but it is a pleasant, light read.

Reading a sequel without reading the first novel can be a bit tricky at times. And with this one, it took sometime before I really understood the world of Lily Hollow. Also the glimpses into the past kept me on my toes as they took me off guard when I began.
The characters are complex and connected in this small town. The writing was excellent.
