I’ll Be the One von Lyla Lee
I LOVE competition show novels, especially if they're queer, and this is no exception! I will read every YA book Lyla Lee authors. My only issue is that the connection with Skye and Henry didn't go as deep as I'd have liked, but I love them both anyway. And all of Skye's friends are fantastic. I loved the way this resolved and think it'd be so cool to see a sequel!
½Skye is a charming heroine. Her mother is awful to her, believing her daughter is a disgrace because of her weight. Henry is a sweet teddy bear. Skye is determined to prove her mother wrong. Skye faces discrimination, but she believes in herself and has the support of her friends. Both she and Henry are bi-sexually. Also Skye befriends a lesbian couple.
Mindy, her dad and her stepmother, Julie, travel to South Korea to honor the ancestors and partake in the mid-autumn festival of Chuseok. We get to learn about Chuseok and some other Korean cultural traditions surrounding food, games, clothing and family. A bit sad, but joyful as well.
Easy reader chapter book about a girl, Mindy Kim, who moves to Florida with her dad after her mom passes. Mindy deals with being the new girl, wanting a puppy, and emotions over her moms death. Great representation of a Korean American girl, with Korean foods and language. I would absolutely recommend for an early chapter book reader, engaging writing and occasional supportive pictures. Great representation and father-daughter relationship, as well as dealing with emotions such as loneliness, anxiety, and grief.… (mehr)
