Really nice history of Piper, from the Taylor beginnings to roughly 2000. Covers the personalities, business details, and every variant of every plane, including some that never flew. Lots of black and white photos, lots of appendices with more info. Well-written, and full of interesting stories and facts.

A great book on a now obscure manufacturer. Would like to have seen a little more post 1930's details. Well worth the money.

E.M. "Matty" Laird was an American success story - born to a working class Chicago family, he turned his innate mechanical abilities and fascination with flight into a career that put him at the top of aviation's pioneers. As early as 1915, he was flying a home-made biplane in exhibitions; and in 1919 he set-up shop in Wichita, building the Laird Swallow, America's first commercial aircraft. After moving to Chicago, he designed and manufactured the LC-R Speedwing series of planes. Laird's airplanes were high-quality machines, and they were known for their speed. In 1930 and 1931, he built the Solution and Super Solution race planes, flown by Charles "Speed" Holman and Jimmy Doolittle, respectively. Solution won the Thompson Trophy in 1930, and Super Solution won the first Bendix cross-country race in a record-setting time of less than 12 hours. A fascinating look at the early days of commercial aviation and air racing in the United States.

Although much has been written about Cessna aircraft, little factual information has been accumulated about Clyde Vernon Cessna, the man, his companies and the machines that bore his name. In Cessna - a Master's Expression, Ed Phillips has skillfully blended history with a highly readable text that represents the most thoroughly researched story of Cessna yet published. Accordingl, much new ground has been covered in this book. The reader will quickly discovery that many of the previously accepted stories of Cessna history will conflict with the information presented herein. Mr. Phillips has done much original and intensive research into the earliest days of Cessna's flying, a time period sorely lacking in reliable information until now. He interviewed Cessna factory employees who were there when many of the company's historic events occured. The author also talked with men and women who knew Clyde Cessna and his son, Eldon a team that built the famous CR-series racers in 1932-1933.

Of all the light airplanes built in America since the 1930s, the Cessna series of monoplanes has emerged as one of the best known today to both airman and layman alike, spreading their wings to serve the needs of flight training, charter, corporate, private agricultural and military aviation for over 50 years. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the Cessna airplanes built from 1946 through 1986 in a pictorial format, one that lends itself to the interest of the weekend pilot as well as the hero historian. In the half century since the Model C-34 took flight and ushered the company into its second era, six basic families of airplanes were created, designed to cover a wide spectrum of the general aviation marketplace. Each series of airplanes are presented as follows: 100 series, 200 series, 300 series, 400 series, 500 series, 600 series. In addition, information is included regarding experimental models that were built and flown, but because of flight performance, economic or market considerations were not given production status. The reader will find information conveniently grouped for each model and its derivative that pertains to year of introduction, price, quantity produced and general specifications. When applicable, additional information on a specific model or other notes of interest will be included. Appendix A contains footnotes pertaining to certain models for constructor number blocks. Three-view drawings are included with the text for each major single and multi-engine model.

detailed took at the Model 17 during 1930's & Through WWII. Includes comprehensive history of Walter Beech & designer Ted Wells. detailed scale drawing. At the height of the Great Depression, aircraft executive Walter H. Beech and T.A. “Ted” Wells joined forces to collaborate on a project many considered foolhardy—a large, powerful, and fast biplane built specifically for the business executive. The Beech Model 17, popularly known as the “Staggerwing” (the name comes from the top wing being set, or staggered, behind the bottom wing) was first flown on November 4, 1932, setting the standard for private passenger airplanes for many years to come.

Designed in secret by Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Lloyd Stearman in 1928, the five Travel Air Type R "Mystery Ships," which were faster than any plane the U.S. military possessed, dominated the air racing circuit for several years. This heavily illustrated book examines the history of each of the five models of this wire-braced, low-wing, 235-mph racing airplane - and their colorful pilots, including Jimmy Doolittle, Frank Hawks and "Pancho" Barnes.
