The stories are a bit simple, but it's a fun read/listen. My favorite part? I listened to the LibriVox audiobook and some of the volunteers took the time to sing the songs (sometimes with instruments). I don't think a professionally read book would go through so much trouble. I give it 5 arrows hitting the same mark out of 5 arrows - of course they all split the shaft of the previous.

Per Ambleside Online- the Pyle version is a bit more advanced.

Classic tale of Robin Hood but written as a graphic novel. Robin Hood likes to steal from the rich and give to the poor. Especially since Prince John took over in his brothers absence and is greedy.

I enjoy the language - that's why my wife bought it for me. e.g., "haply thou has forgot it, but I have not." and "I do now crave thy gracious leave that I may serve the lady as her true knight." However, the style is apish, blatantly formulaic and fawning.

Pyle wrote this book in 1891 about the ascendence of Myles Falworth from boyhood in an 'attainted' former Earldom to acclaimed knight and reclaimer of the family estate. The storyline does not carry the reader through the book.

See the 1954 movie adaptation, The Black Shield of Falworth, starring Tony Curtis and his wife Janet Leigh.

This series, with its wonderful set of illustrations, was my introduction to arthuriana. Now, rereading them after sixty five years, I am not in the least disatisfied. They hold up well, though their is an avoidance of the grittier bits one finds in Mallory. read all four of them, and enjoy this very sad coda to the work.½

Recently I stumbled across a series that was evidently based on the Robin Hood legend. Though not my usual genre, I found myself intrigued enough to consider adding it to my TBR list. But then I thought maybe it would be a good idea to read some of the older stories about the legendary folk hero- which other than a Disney-like story I read as a child; I had never done- to my knowledge. I have seen a few movies- but I wanted to read what I thought might be some of the 'original' tales and not the Hollywood version of them- which led me to this boo. This compilation of stories set the tone for Robin Hood going forward- though, the tales of Robin Hood had been around long before Pyle put his stamp on them.

This collection of stories was written by Howard Pyle back in 1883. He adapted the older Robin Hood ballads, changed a few things up, including Robin’s original villainous reputation –making him into a hero who robbed the rich to feed the poor.

The book starts off with the story about how Robin Hood became something of an outlaw and wound-up living in Sherwood Forest. From there we are introduced to his Merry men and off we go on a variety of often hilarious adventures, meeting an eclectic group of people- some who become allies and some who remain staunch enemies.

I never would have thought I’d find Robin Hood stories this enjoyable- but I admit I had a good time reading this book, which was nothing at all like I thought it would be- and doing a little research about the Robin Hood legend's origins. The language in this book, as I learned, was made up of a fake medieval dialect and it was hard to follow on occasion, as a result. It was also unintentionally funny sometimes because words today mean something entirely different from when this book was published.

All the same, I have a renewed respect for the Robin Hood legend. This was a fun exercise and was certainly a much-needed change of pace. I feel much better equipped now to pursue more stories or pastiches built around the legend of Robin Hood! Who knows, maybe I’ll even tackle Ivanhoe someday.

4 stars

Moving along from the Previous volume, we have here the story of Lancelot's marriage to Elaine the fair, and te birth of Galahad. The story of Beauains the kitchen knight is also dealt with, The last item s the story of Sir ewaine and the Lady of the Fountain. After 65 years it was good to do a reread.½

This step in Pyle's Redaction contains "The Story of Lancelot, covering his chilhood and emergence as the best knight in the world; The Book of Sir tristram, the complete life story of the entanglement with La Belle Isolde, and its outcome,;and the Book of sir Percival, also an origin story. The language is clear enough, and the art is at a wonderfully high level. The book was originally published in 1905,½

This is the lead book in howard Pyle's four volume redaction of the Arthurian cycle. It draws heavily on the Malory Version, but also contains material from the Prose lancelot, and the Gawaine set of stories. The prose is not the language of the 1890's and turn of that century, but the kind of Midieval-speak also found in conan Doyle's "The white company". That's a bit sad, but there is the art-work. Pyle was a magnificent illustrator, and draws wonderful horses and te most realistic looking castles to be found in young adult literature. These books set my Arthurian focus, and I am rereading them for the joy of it. The armour details are not good, and the ancestor of Marvel universe Spandex.
So we have the sword in the stone, Gawaine and Ragnell, the quest for Excaliber, and the wooing of Gwenivere, and the chilling story of Sir Pelleas, and the Lady of the Lake, one of the most supernatural of the Arthuriana. Get a big format copy that grants the full power of the illustrations.
This book has enchanted the world since 1903.

Hilariously, aggressively chauvinist, almost to parody. The art it delightful, but the text is almost too much. So may loins and thews!

Adapted by Deborah Kestel
3***

A friend mentioned that her book club was focusing on classics this year and this was their monthly read. When I said that I had never read the full story (though, of course, I was familiar with the legend), she offered to pass the book along to me when she was finished.

Well, what she had was the “Great Illustrated Classics” edition, adapted by Deborah Kestel for a younger audience, and illustrated by Pablo Marcos Studio.

It’s a fast, fun adventure with lots of fighting, competition, disguises, and more than a few near misses. Most of the characters are here, including Friar Tuck, Little John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. But Maid Marion is mentioned only once.

I imagine the middle-school audience would enjoy this legend of adventure and derring-do. I wanted more depth to the story, though I doubt I’ll try to go back and read the original.

I’m sure I must have read this book as a kid, but I was astonished on this read-through to discover how very different Pyle’s Robin Hood is from all those more familiar adaptations which came after. It is as if none of them stopped to read Pyle’s work.

Robin Hood tricked into coming to the archery tournament and captured? Not in Pyle’s work. He fools the sherif and gets away Scot free.

Maid Marian? Not appearing in this show … save one reminiscence of the teen Robin Hood in the prologue and one comparison of her hair to the color of a bread crust in Chapter 17.

Sir Guy of Gisbourne? Longtime friend and accomplice of the sherif? Nope. A vicious outlaw, hired by the sherif once to get Robin, but overcome and killed … in the same Chapter … one and done.

I could go on …

I was also amused by the jolly description of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. History does not record their relationship as quite so chummy. In fact, he had her put in the dungeon for her part in a revolt against him. She also lead battles in the Crusades. You should read up on them sometime: nice couple.

He robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, and had escapades enough to please any adventure-loving child. Now even the youngest readers can have the chance to enter Sherwood Forest with Robins band of merry men, and meet such unforgettable characters as Friar Tuck, Little John, Allan-a-Dale, the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham, and wicked King John. Every moment of the story is filled with action and excitement.

He stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and in so doing became an undying symbol of virtue. But most important, Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men offer young readers more than enough adventure and thrills to keep them turning the pages. Who could resist the arrows flying, danger lurking, and medieval intrigue?

Recounts the legend of Robin Hood, who plundered the king's purse and poached his deer and whose generosity endeared him to the poor.

I finished The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. A rousing adventure tale that is surprisingly well written. The descriptions of settings and people are detailed with maybe a few too many synonyms but all of them spot on for understanding the stories. I read this for January ClassicsCAT and enjoyed it. I don't think I ever read it before: most definitely more of "boy's" book with women appearing few and far between. We do get to connect with Queen Eleanor who loves Robin Hood as much as her husband along with the Bishop and Sheriff hate him. Richard the Lionheart also connects with the outlaws when he comes to understand their approach to life.

I found this to be pretty entertaining, but also very repetitive. Robin Hood or one of his crew meets up with a stranger. Neither identify themselves, but they end up fighting over really sketchy reasons and then the stranger ends up joining up with the Merry Men. So much fighting and often over nothing! The other thing that struck me is that Robin Hood might have occasionally helped out someone in need, but he generally robbed the rich or powerful and kept the loot for himself. So much for the giving to the poor meme! And this version of the legend makes no mention whatsoever of Maid Marian. Perhaps because it seems more directed at a youthful audience and legend has it that Maid Marian and Robin Hood were lovers. We can't have any of that sex stuff, but bring on the violence!! I wouldn't read it again, but I'm glad I read it once.½

It was fun to finally hear the real adventures of Robin Hood after so many years of only knowing the Hollywood version. There's a surprising amount of singing among the Merry Men, which works quite well in an audiobook but probably less well in a physical book. Special shout-out to the narrator, who did an excellent job not only with singing all the songs but with giving great voice to the various characters.

For over 700 years, books, plays, songs, movies have been based on this legendary hero. Even after all this time, the story fascinates us. A true classic.

Sou fã de literatura arturiana e gosto de Howard Pyle, mas não apreciei a tradução de português do Brasil. Fiquei com vontade de ler em inglês para perceber as diferenças.
