First sentence: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Since first reading the NASB 1977 translation in 2019, I have fallen head over heels in love with this translation. I've read it five or six times at least. I think I read it three times last year. I am already planning on reading it again this year. So without a doubt the translation is one I absolutely love and adore and would definitely recommend.

This was my first time to read a Ryrie Study Bible. The Ryrie Study Bible is available in various translations. This one is double column, verse by verse, red letter. Study notes are on the bottom of the page. There are book introductions. This one does feature outlines in the book introductions and the text of the Bible itself--along the lines of paragraph headings that you might find in other translations. (Though to be clear, this one is verse by verse.)

I read most of the notes. That isn't always the case. (I typically read text-only Bibles). Did I agree with all the notes absolutely, positively? No. Did I find all the notes relevant and helpful? Probably not. But they also weren't super overwhelming and intimidating. It was a good balance of text and notes. Some study bibles have more study notes than scripture per page. That--to me--is intimidating and confusing. The notes are definitely dispensational.

I started this Bible on April 6, 2024. I finished on May 9, 2024. I used a reading plan of my own creation--the M'Cheyne-Horner bookmark plan.

This is the best short book I know of on the doctrine of a pre-tribulational rapture.

This commentary is designed not to mystify, but to clarify. Dr. Ryrie interpretation is characterized by clearly understandable explanations and careful attention to significant feature of the book. This is a chapter-by-chapter and often verse-by-verse exposition.

What makes the Bible the same authority for millions of Christians in totally different cultures? How did Christ use the Bible of his day? What about problems in the Old and New Testament? How can we most profitably study the Bible?

The answers to these questions, plus an unusual question-and-answer approach to each book of the Bible, makes this book a unique contribution to an understanding of the Bible.

Recognized for his ability to present significant ideas simply and succinctly, Charles Ryrie has combined many years of teaching the Bible and theology as well as a special interest in collecting unique Bible editions, to produce an invaluable introductory guide to the Bible.

From the editor of the popular Ryrie Study Bible comes a systematic approach to Christian theology that will prove edifying to any class of theologian, be they pastor or plumber. In Basic Theology, Ryrie has taken the daunting topic of theology and created an even-handed introduction to and reference for a variety of major theological concerns, giving the reader a sturdy foothold for their faith and a powerful weapon against heresy and unfounded interpretations of God’s Word.

There is nothing wrong with being an amateur theologian or a professional theologian. There is everything wrong, however, with being an ignorant or sloppy theologian. As Christians, our thoughts about God need to coincide with what He’s said about Himself in the Bible. The phrase “sound doctrine” that Paul used means healthy doctrine (e.g., 2 Timothy 4:3; Titus 1:9). Healthy doctrine or healthy theology is always expected to result in holy living.

Written with a clear understanding of the Scriptures and an unpretentious style, Charles Ryrie’s classic Basic Theology is a standard text for many Bible students and pastors. In fact, Ryrie's theology is required reading for a variety of seminary courses. The work's clear, thoughtful language and concise exposition of topics make Basic Theology an easy to understand introduction to systematic theology for the layperson. It also serves as a handy and compact reference for the theologian or scholar.

This edition features 94 chapters arranged in outline style for easy reference. It also includes charts, definitions, scripture and subject indices to guide you to a clear and comprehensive picture of Ryrie's approach to systematic theology. Considerable attention is given to the dispensational view of the end times.

Reading this book will help you begin to think about how God wants to conform you to the image of Christ. Designed with personal application in mind, Basic Theology will provide you with sound theology, which in turn produces holy living.

A version that thinks for you. Learn to think! Let me rephrase that. We need to be taught more about how to think instead of what to think. Ryrie (obviously in my opinion) doesn't have anything greatly troubling, but I grew up with Ryrie and found myself consuming more of what Ryrie's comments were than what the actual text says. I would suggest comparing translations instead of relying on commentaries. ESV and a NKJV side by side. Better, go to the original Texts. I've read New Living, Living, NAS, KJV, NKJV, ESV and several of the more "story" versions. There are significant differences. Best thing that ever happened was taking Hermeneutics, Apologetics, and Theology courses. Taught me so much about how to read these Texts instead of what they said.

OK, so specifically about this version. Very evangelical or Baptist type perspectives. Nothing wrong with that so long as you are aware of it as you read it. That being said, it is absolutely full of wonderful insights. Love it very much. it was the first 'big' Bible I ever had. Was suggested by a pastor that I wish would have told me it was a 'perspective'. You'll love this version. My choice AFTER a version like this is the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible: Key Insights Into God's Word -New American Standard Bible. Doesn't have a fraction of the insights, but that isn't it's purpose. The Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible is for getting as close to the original meaning as possible. Second choice would be the ESV Study and then almost anything by Holman. Love Holman tools.

The New American Standard Bible is my favorite English language translation of the Bible. I appreciate the way it tries to stay close to the original languages in structure so we catch some of the nuances translations which are looser do not provide. Some say it makes it less readable, but I think it makes it a perfect Bible for in depth Bible study. The Ryrie Study Bible provides additional tools to assist in studying the Bible and is one of the better study Bibles available for this translation.

This book is part of my collection that really focuses in on Biblical Commentary more than anything else (including some well known authors in the theological world). All of these books haven't been read cover to cover, but I've spent a lot of time with them and they've been helpful in guiding me through difficult passages (or if I desire to dig deeper).

Obviously the Bible is in my collection and it would also be really weird to actually review the Bible. It's the Bible.

Short, concise (sometimes maddeningly so) look at the major tenets of Christianity. In just 184 short pages, Ryrie hits God, man, Christ, the Holy Spirit, Salvation, the church, and the future. It is a good reference tool, and if more detail is needed, then a systematic theology can be consulted. It is easy to read and doesn't get bogged down in lots of theological language. Therefore, this is accessible to the layperson.

Ryrie does an excellent job of breaking down fundamental doctrines of Evangelical Theology. This is a great read for new Christians or anyone trying to expand their knowledge of what they believe.

This book is exactly what it purports to be: a book on BASIC theology. It is wonderfully written and is a great starter book for the new-to-theology student. I recommend it wholeheartedly.½

Sovereign grace is undeserved because of sin. The opposite of grace is merited reward; the opposite of sovereign is enslaved. God displays this grace particuarly in salvation.
