*I got this book form the publisher for my honest thoughts*

I found this to super fun read. I thought it was much more realistic and science heavy version of 39 clues. This book def had a strong mix of adventure and mystery but also knowledge and history and science. I really loved the structure of this book and all the characters were just so much fun to read about. I really enjoyed the trio of characters that developed and am super excited to see how the ending and will effect the structure of the future books. I also loved how this book had so many pictures to accent the story. Readers who enjoyed 39 clues may like this if they looking for more of realistic story, should check it out! I am def going to read book 2!

This exciting story of a pre-teen boy who joins the Explorer Academy has fact within the fiction. Real places are used, like Hawaii, and there are profiles at the end of the book about real national Geographic scientists!

A fitting end to this series for pre-teens, early teens. Cruz and his friends must find the final piece of the puzzle to solve the cipher and unlock its secrets. Bur time is not on their side as they struggle to finish out the classwork for the year, race against the mysterious Nebula, and try to uncover the spy in their midst. And as they get closer to the goal, the more dangerous things become. Trueit has a very readable writing style and through the series of books her characters have grown together like a family. The characters are complex and realistic and the mix of geography, biology and other sciences with futuristic technology makes this adventure series even more compelling. In addition, at the end of each book are short articles on the science upon which much of the plot is based. It is both a good read and an educational one. I thoroughtly enjoyed this series!

The Explorers' adventures continue as does Cruz's search for the final clue to his deceased mom's puzzle that will lead him to the answers he needs - about her work and about himself. He and some of his close friends race against the mysterious and deadly Nebula all the while continuing their education aboard the Orion, a sea going classroom for the Academy. But Cruz and his friends cannot figure out the latest riddle tht will lead them to the last piece of the puzzle and so they have no destination and no idea where to look for the next, and final, clue. Even though these books are targeted for young readers, I have thoroughly enjoyed them. They are quick reads with very good characters and the occasional plot twist. And while they are fiction, Trueit uses modern science and technology and offers the reader references in the appendix to where the information is found in our word today. I am looking forward to the final book with great anticipation!

I appreciate that the author makes real science and real places exciting. The diversity in the characters is also a plus. Also, the illustrations and the lay-out of this book is one of the best I have ever seen. In the back of the book is a appendix called All the Truth Behind the Fiction. This is exceptional, again I have never seen it in any other fiction book for children.

Good story with lots of innovative products

This is a great story for kids to read. It gives them things they can think about creating and different jobs they can do. I wish I had these kind of books to read when I was a kid.

An enjoyable adventure - especially for kids, but I found it to be an easy and entertaining read for me as well. Trueit also does an amazing job of research to bring new techolonogy and science into these novels. She highlights the adventure but in doing so offers problem solving skills, team work, and friendship as models - again especially for young readers.

Disclaimer: I am not the target demographic for this book. This book is written for teens and youth, but a couple of my Scouts were talking about it so I decided to check it out. While the plot is somewhat predictable in places, there are also a few twists to surprise. The characters, while not as complex as what I am used to, were well done and Trueit's writing style is very readable. This was a fun read and I will likely read the sequel.

This book was given to me to read by the librarian at the elementary school I work at. I am often asked to do this in order for them to better monitor the books that our library receives and to make sure the books are appropriate for the age groups who will be checking them out.

I have to be honest and admit I wasn't looking forward to reading this one. Overall, on first appearances it seems to be intended for a very young audience and I wasn't holding out much hope that there would be any real depth to the book beyond "who our besties will be this week." I ended up being VERY surprised with this one.

The main character, Julep, is a typical, awkward 11 year old who is desperately trying to fit in. She envies the other kids in her class at school, all of whom have cell phones, SE (self expression) tees, and manageable hair while her mother is trying so hard to make her realize she doesn't need to be like everyone else. I loved how the author really has shown the struggle of every school-aged girl to fit in while trying to be independent and true to themselves and the dysfunctional relationship we often have with our mothers at that age.

The book is actually going on my "must purchase" list for when my daughter is a little older. It was cute, but not too cute, relevant to today's preteens, and written in a manner that will draw the young reader into the story.

This is Nat Geo's first fictional middle-grade book. It wasn't a hit here- but it was full of beautiful illustrations and plenty of science.

I thought that this picture book was a great depiction of what Earth Day is and why it is so important to take care of the environment. Many nonfiction texts use a glossary to define words students may not know and this book did that with pictures. I love the use of putting a picture with a word to help remember it. This book would be great for younger grades with students who may not know as much about what Earth Day is.

Earthquakes are a natural occurring shifts of the earth. In this book the author tells about what creates earthquakes. The book discusses plates moving and the reason they move. It also tells about the events during and following an earthquake. During an earthquake the ground, building, and objects are shaken. Depending on the strength of an earthquake will determine the damages. After an earthquake there can be other natural causes such as tsunamis.

I really enjoyed this informational book. I think it is important to know why things happen in nature. I think kids need to be aware of the surrounding world so they won't be surprised when the natural things occur. I have felt three earthquakes in my lifetime, but i realize that the earth shakes daily. I would like to do a natural occurrences section in my classroom. I would like to take about earthquakes, weather, and wildfires.

Classroom Extension 1: I would make several containers of jello. I would have the students place small objects on top of the jello. I would have the students shake the jello container from side to side. I would then have then journal about what they saw the objects do and how the movement effected them.

Classroom Extension 2: Using a package of Oreos, the students would each reserve one cookie. I would ask them to demonstrate what it looks like for plates to slide past one another, to slide over one another, and slide under one another.

Storm chasers is about extreme weather watchers. The storm chasers follow storms with a potential of becoming dangerous. They track everything from tornadoes to hurricanes. The storm chasers use all kinds of technology to track the ever changing weather. They are ultimately trying to figure out what causes weather to be the way it is. They are also trying to find ways to alert people in a more timely fashion before a storm hits. They use everything from highly armored cars, radar, and probes to track the weather.

I always found weather to be very interesting. Before deciding to become a teacher I wanted to be a weather person. I thought it would be so interesting to see the storm up close and personal. I wanted to help give people a better piece of mind about storms, and be apart of a team that would let the community know about what was coming. I found this book to be very informational and interesting.

Classroom Extension 1: As a class we would make a tornado in a jar. We would discuss what makes the tornado and why it takes the spinning motion to cause a tornado.

Classroom Extension 2: We would write up a weather safety plan as a class. We would make a guide line for what we would do as a class during a storm.

Homework Idea: I would ask the students to make a weather plan with their families. I would ask them to describe what they would do in times of bad weather. I would also ask them to tell where they would go inside or outside of their house. I would have them share their plan in class.

This would be a great book to read to students and for students to use for projects when they are learning about frogs and toads.

I liked this book. The main idea is the celebration and history of Hanukkah. The book discussed the traditions of Hanukkah and what each tradition means. In the text, pronunciations are given next to vocabulary words. For example, menorah (muh-NOR-uh) is given in the text. These text features allow readers to figure out how to say the word correctly. Another reason I liked the book was the background of each page. Traditional symbols and elements were like wallpaper for the story; the background ties in each page and maintains the focus of the theme. These symbols include: Menorahs, dradles, and the start of David. There are a few pages in the book that have text squares and columns that display additional information about the holiday. Overall this was a good book and very informational about Hanukkah.

This book discussed the similarities and differences between octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish. I actually liked this book. The first reason I liked it was because the pictures in this book were actual photos of the animals, and it gave me as the reader a glimpse of how the animals would look in the ocean. The color's shown on the octopuses where very extravagant, for example one of them was yellow and blue. It is amazing to be able to see that one animal type can have different shades of colors and sizes just like people.
The second reason I liked this book was because I gave a small information box at the tops of the pages. This box told the name of the animal, the family, a common example, the genus and species, the size, and the location. I thought this information box was good to incorporate because it summarizes a lot of some basic information that I was able to refer back to. Plus, this information box described the animals in the pictures on those pages, and it helped me to put it into perspective as well as visualize it.

This nonfiction book explains exactly what poetry is made up of and how it is different from other types of writing. The information is presented in a lighthearted tone against backgrounds of color photography or animation. Examples are provided, though some of the content used may be too difficult to relate to for students in elementary grades. The book also encourages the reader to try her hand at writing poetry. Additional links and an index are provided. This book may be a good personal purchase for teachers to use as a reference for ideas, but it likely would not be of interest to young, independent readers. Not recommended for a children’s library.½

A friendly overview to many kinds of poems. While quotes from "Epic of Gilgamesh" or Walt Whitman might go above the target audience's heads, the appealing layout and bird's-eye overview will be a useful addition to school libraries. Galley provided by publisher via NetGalley.com. (160)
