The Count of Monte Cristo is the tense and exciting story of Edmond Dantes, a man on the threshold of a bright career and a happy marriage, who is imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If on a false political charge. After staging a dramatic escape, he finds the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo which makes him wealthy. He then sets upon the course of revenge against his old enemies.

The polls showed this as the one getting the most votes (6 out of 7) hopefully, others will join in too.

The start date is January 1, 2012. I will work on getting some discussion threads ready by then.

Hope we have a good group!

Hi everyone! I'm Jennifer and I'm excited about reading The Count of Monte Cristo. I've been meaning to read this for a while and haven't gotten around to it. I was wondering if anyone has decided which translation they'll read yet? I have the book on my kindle and don't know the translator, probably an old translation, but I've also seen that there's a new translation by Robin Buss for Penguin Classics that people rave about. Any thoughts?

Thanks for setting up the group read!

My book is just a Barnes and Noble copy, so I am guessing it is an old translation. I will have to go dig it up and see.

My copy is the Penguin edition with the Buss translation and I thought it was wonderful. But I think this time I will attempt to work a deal out with Baron von Kindle. Should work out nicely as the Penquin edition is a real chunkster at weighing in at 1276 pages. I loved this story and am so happy to be reading it again.
Thank you Cheli.

Just so you know, I did find a kindle edition of the Buss translation for about $5. I know you can find different translations for free, but it's available if you want it.

I have some discussion questions for the COMC. Should I setup a separate group for this read or just add different threads? - I think we've had separate groups before.

Either way is fine with me. Whichever is easiest for you to organize.

Then I think I'm go so set up a separate group, probably tomorrow. That way each discussion question can have it's own thread.
