So frustrating when you can't remember the name of a book. I remember the plot pretty well, but nothin that helped a Google search.

The story starts with a girl who was once left at a monastary, where she is paying of her "debt" by working for the cook/baker. One night she helps a wounded man she finds on her doorstep. She hides him and treats him. In return for the help, she asks him if he will teach her how to read. The art of reading is limited to "priests" and the head of the monetary won't allow her to learn. These priests have powers/magic. She has it as well, and she is in fact very powerful even though she doesn't really know it.

There is a plot against these priests and a threatening dark magic that is spreading the world. This dark magic has previously destroyed another country in which that king died. The girl apparently is from this country.

From the local "ranger" (I think she starts to learn to become a ranger as well and this ranger becomes her mentor) we eventually learn that this ranger brought that kings daughter to this country. She thinks she is it, but apparently it is supposed to be another girl. The guy she saved, she falls in love with him, but he has to take care of this other girl and teach her to use her powers (which she doesn't really have).

I think the dark magic is wielded by a group of woman, and through jewelry. One woman attacks the monastery at some point, however the monastary survives due to a flooding of some sort. The other girl is brought to a different city/country, but the dark magic starts here and they are recruiting her. The man joins her. The main girl goes after them to stop them.

These priests are also some sort of Knights, supposed to protect the king or something, but at one point they are attacked/killed/unwanted though manipulation from the dark side. At one point she also takes this priest test or something and she becomes one of them I think.

I don't remember any names, that's the trouble. Though I do remember something about there being other orphans and that the girls who do the washing are called something like "lavender girls"

Anyone?

I think they didn't call it a monastary but an Abbott. Also there was something about her loving the apples from the Abbott gardens and they reminded her of home when they were away.

Sounds like The Wretched of Muirwood by Jeff Wheeler. The first lines of the description are:
Fantasy fiction. In the ancient and mystical land of Muirwood, Lia has known only a life of servitude. Labeled a "wretched," an outcast unwanted and unworthy of respect, Lia is forbidden to realize her dream to read or write.
