Now I've gone and become the dummy who not only can't remember the title and author, I can't remember the plot! I can just picture this cover with a menacing black cube on the cover, possibly with a strange handle (in the shape of a horn?) sticking out of it.
The cube was not a spaceship (no Borg here!). I think it was an alien artifact uncovered by an archaeology team. The book could have been by Michael Crichton, or someone who writes in a similar vein.
Not much to go on, I know. Sorry!

Two things are funny about this: 1) that I couldn't remember a title as simple as Artifact; and 2) out of all the LTers in the world, the answer came from someone local to me and in one of the same real world book groups I'm in! (That's assuming you're who I think you are -- but I'm pretty sure it's you!)
And the cover is just the way I remember it, with that weird horn thing sticking out of the cube.....
