We need to talk --

perhaps you already agree that, yes, research is important but you reason intuitively that, since the best and brightest minds are already likely to be found in universities and research institutions, then it would seem reasonable to assume that, if a topic of research has true merit, there's already work underway on it among mainstream academic scholars because the brightest minds will have recognized the merit.

I want to suggest that, as reasonable as that may seem, it's simply not true. It's a myth.
