I read this a while ago, around the time I was in middle school, so around 2014-2015 but it may have been published earlier.
It is a 2 book series, but has spin-off titles wherein it follows the main character's son
The book is kind of like what you would expect out of some lesser know adult book (maybe its famous, I don't know). It was relatively small in size, paper back. Kind of like a paper dictionary, I think.
This may not be true, but from what I can remember, the book featured a cloaked man with his face covered
Also the main character's name may or may not start with an "A" and be something like "Ash" or "Acsh" or something, but don't quote me on that.

This essentially is what I remember of the plot of both books:

It's a book feature two races - who I perceived to be essentially elves and humans or perhaps elves and dwarves. the elf-like creatures have magic while the other race (I'll call them human for now) does not have magic mostly.
The main character is of the 'human' race. He leaves his town/ home where his family works on the sea, I believe in order to gain money. He sneaks away from home, so his father doesn't know. He hopes to make it big in the city. He meets the prince (who is of the elvish race) somehow and the prince eventually takes him on as an adviser. The main character becomes a pretty good adviser, despite the other royal advisers being more wary of him, I think

In any case, the prince doesn't have magic. He's essentially a cripple. This is important to the throne because I weather magic (i believe) is need to protect and keep the wall up around the kingdom. The main character, after gaining enough money, decides to leave the prince eventually once he made enough money. They have an argument, but it turns out the main character's father died while he was away and he get beaten by his siblings. He returns to the prince.

There is also a villain who want the great evil power outside the walls. I believe he gets possessed by the power out side of the wall and kills the Prince's family in an 'accident' and magically gifts the prince magic. The prince becomes king and starts magicking the wall with his newfound powers. The main character is always around the prince and once the prince inevitably loses power, he finds that he can do the storm magic. So he takes over the magicking (which wrecks havoc on his body as this magic is 'a two-edged sword'.

Something bad happens when people discover than this human is doing the magic. He gets captured after the evil guy threatens to mass genocide his species or something. Also, something about betrayal. He also has a kid at the end with this woman who can also do a 'earthen human-type' magic.

As you can see, I can't remember the end much. I really want to read the book again, because I remember how it impacted me. I don't know.

Thanks for any help
