Went through some of my old Early Reviewers, and for some reason, completely missed doing this one. Only a few years late.
1. Corderoy, Tracey - Great Granny Cake Contest - 3 Stars - Early Reviewer
Cute little chapter book about Pandora, a witch, and her adventures with her witch granny. The illustrations for this book are adorable. The book is divided into 3 short stories - Ghosts of Creakington Hall (a trip to an old house that's a museum), the Great Granny Cake Contest (a Granny witch cake making contest), Alakazoom! The Great Bunny Boom (the surprise that comes with 'growing' giant carrots). Easy enough to follow, the vocabulary seemed appropriate for the reading level, generally good book
Definitely think this is a win, especially for girls. The illustrations are definitely the best part of it. My only issue with the book was every single male in the book was either evil or made fun of for their physical appearance. It would have been nice for at least one male character to not be trying to steal treasure or follicly challenged. You'd be surprised how many jokes about bald men are in this book.

3. Noeli, Lisa - Passionate Miss Prudence - 2 stars
Another re-read. This is what I thought of it in 2011: 4 Stars
Prudence helps her cousin catalog books for her lending library to benefit the morality of young women. Lady Agatha's son, the handsome Lord Alwyn, is the architect of the project. Naturally, a romance starts to bud involving some mysterious etchings. A sweet romance, but a bit jumpy chronologically.
Wow. I could not have changed my opinion more. Another case of life changing a person I guess. The book wasn't sweet at all, the heroine was a pain in the bum, there was really no plot to speak of for most of the book, a hypocritical cleric, well meaning but flighty, ignorant aunt. The hero was ok, but I have no idea why I like it so much a decade ago. If the heroine is bad, what's the point? The premise of a girl secretly becoming an advice columnist just to shove it in a guy's face that she could write about something she knew nothing about seemed pointless. Aside from her literally being the only unmarried woman around, I have no idea why the hero liked her. And Prudence wasn't passionate in the least. Another root gone I guess.

Another 2011 reread. Gave it 5 stars at the time. So don't feel the same way. Virtually nothing happens in the book. If I had to review it today, I'd give it 3 stars for basically decent grammar, no plot holes, nothing to jarring when reading. It really is quite forgettable. Always liked the cover though.

6. Scott, Bronwyn - Awakening the Shy Miss - 3 Stars
I feel like I read this book recently. Decent romance. Prince is an archaeologist. Falls in love with a wallflower who he fights the local guy for. Corruption. Stolen artifacts. Decent, but still find it hard to believe a prince would be able to marry a commoner from a different country.

All the kingdoms are getting together for a science fair. Princess Magnolia is super excited. But what do you know, the volcano science project gets out of control! Turns out, it really is a monster. Everyone in the science fair gets together to take down this monster.
Very cute. Bright, colorful illustrations. Fast moving. For those in about grades 2 - 4. Great addition to the series.

8. Avi - Gold Rush Girl - 3 stars
The first thing I thought when this book arrived was it's trying to be a new 'True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle', and in a way it does, but not quite. While this is a good book, probably suitable for about grades 2-4, I could not read it without comparing it to Avi's previous work. Frankly Avi has written so much at this point there are bound to be some comparable books. 'Doyle' however was so much richer in plot and language than this book. It really illustrates the simplification of children's literature. I imagine there is a comparison paper there for someone analyzing children's literature.
Victoria Blaisdell does not want to follow the mold of a girl of her station. She doesn't like dances, she doesn't want to marry. At this point, this premise is just so overdone to me. It just seems cliche. And of course the evil people to her are those trying to get her to do what is expected. Just too predictable.
That aside, this is a fairly decent adventure book. Victoria, or Tory as she's called, decides to stow away on a ship. Her father lost his job, isn't good at anything else apparently, so he decides to follow the rush of gold in San Francisco. Seems like perhaps he could have tried a new occupation, but I digress. Victoria, her brother, and father all go to California in search of riches.
So when they get to California after a long shipboard journey, they expected large houses and abundant gold. Instead they get tents and poverty. I really appreciated that while the author took the time to be fairly realistic with the state of the conditions, what I couldn't get past was the lack of crime. Victoria wandered around the town, working, dressing in men's clothes, basically being the sole female in the city, and nothing happened to her? Found that extremely difficult to believe. Wandering at night on the docks ... nothing. Wandering into saloons ... nothing. All she got was unwanted marriage proposals. Seemed too unrealistic.
At one point Victoria's father leaves Victoria and her brother alone. While they shouldn't have gone to the gold fields with him, there is no way a middle class girl would have been left alone by choice. Victoria's brother gets stolen and she goes on an adventure looking for him. And of course Victoria goes off with 2 teen boys at the end with no thought at all about what would have been real world issues. Could not get over that.

10. Niccholls, Sally - Button Book - 4 Stars - Early Reviewer
There are a bunch of animals and they each have different color buttons. With each page, each animal pushes their button and and action occurs, clapping, hopping, etc. The illustrations are clean and fairly cute.
This was a really fun book. I see this book could be quite fun in a storytime situation for a librarian/teacher. You could have a bunch of different colored buttons you could press. You could have the kids do the actions given when you press the button. Great read aloud possibilities.

Could not be an odder time to get this book, during a pandemic that is believed to be related to bats in some way.
Cute basic nonfiction book about bats written for perhaps about grade 1-3 students, I imagine however it will be designated higher by Lexile and AR because it contains words like echolocation. The book tells whatever you want to know about bats - habitat, what they eat, their size, how they communicate, what their scientific designation is. What's interesting is it does mention that it does transmit disease. Very prophetic. I actually think this book will probably sell well at this time. While planned probably a year ago, it could not come out at a more opportune time.

Perfect example of why I wish Zebra Regency Romances were still published. Good book, plot was good, romance was good, light but meaty enough to be interesting, when reading it the book doesn't smack of being written in the year it was, doesn't smack of modernity, the heroine had the perfect mix of sticking to the time period but feminist enough for modern audiences. Just the perfect mix. Too bad they stopped publishing these the year after this was written.

32. Martin, Laura - Secrets Behind Locked Doors - 2 stars - Discard
Apparently I never reviewed this even though I have read it before. Well, it would be a discard anyway now. Louisa was thrown into an asylum because her evil guardian wanted to steal her money. Said guardian dies and his heir spends time tracking down a horrible wrong, which is Louisa being put in the asylum. The two fall in love in less than a week - even though they both have severe ptsd, her from the asylum, him from the Peninsular Wars. Robert, her guardian, wants to right wrongs, launching her into society to make up for the year in the asylum, even though he wants her himself.
There is a side plot about a society widow who wants Robert for herself and leaks to society that Louisa was in an asylum. Robert blackmails her to tell the story that the evil guardian lied to get her in there. For some reason, everyone in society believes Robert and not the original piece in the newspaper the widow had placed. It was true Louisa was in the asylum - regardless of the reason. Don't tell me that at least some in society wouldn't be concerned about that. And why did no one in society think that perhaps the connection the next day was a lie by Robert to make Louisa acceptable to society? This entire blackmail part was odd. And Robert bought the asylum at the end and emptied it. Where did they put all the people who actually had severe problems? Just throw them on the street? Very unsatisfying ending.

Book in Spanish about baby animals. The illustrations were great. Really added to the text in a very comforting manner. I didn't realize I had asked for an early reviewer copy in Spanish, which I don't know, so I can't speak to the particulars of the text, but the text is well laid out and clearly printed. I'm going to assume the information is correct. It is a pleasant looking picture book which I imagine is a good non-fiction book about how different animal take care of their young.
