Back in the early 1990's I read a book that I thought was named "Lady Lord" about a young girl who became the new Lord of an Asian clan. This was a fantasy world, but a lot of the rules and structure of the novel seemed to be Asian themed. Several years later, I decided it might be fun to read the story again. I went back to the library where I first got the book, but couldn't find it. I have searched for it on and off for years now, but I have been unable to find it or figure out the author. Here is what I remember about the story.
Her father only had two children, both daughters, to inherit his title so he decided that the main character (his younger daughter as I recall) would become a son in order to give the Clan a worthy leader (her sister was ... not worthy). Best I remember about the story was that they didn't hide her gender specifically, just treated her like she had been a son (her father declared she was his son). There was a whole sub-theme about finding an spouse who would be willing to be treated as a "wife".
In the culture nobles (both male and female) were to remain "pure" until marriage, so when she went on a quest to prove her worth an enemy tried to rape her to make her an unworthy leader. Her sister constantly tried to undermine her in order to gain power, but the rest of the clan knew she was not a worthy successor to the father. What made her unworthy? Part of it was that she tried to backstab her sister, but the other part was that she also tried to work around the "purity" rule by doing everything but intercourse.

She also had a couple of people who were her main helpers, one who was a female servant and another a male. The female servant was tortured to try and stop the Lady Lord, but she remained loyal and was rewarded at the end of the story.
