I apologize for how spotty this might be, but it was one of those books where I didn't quite understand what I was reading at the time and only remembered tertiary details.

The book was about a teenage girl whose father was either missing or presumed dead. As the novel goes on, other people go missing, and she suspects it's all for the same reason. When the novel reaches zero, she somehow is in a space with her father and all the victims. I think the explanation was a type of invasive VR? I remember there was a bit of a body horror scene related to it, think The Matrix. Her dad had something to do with it.

I remember the last chapter because I felt like it was too easy/wish fulfillment at the time, but now I think it was hinting at her still being in the simulation. She wakes up in her room, her dad is home, and the boy who was trying to help her solve the mystery literally says "f*ck it" and they get together. And not a whole lot gets wrapped up.

If it is any help, I am American, and the cover of the book was a drawn close-up of a girl's face with black bangs and heavy eyeliner. Also, I think the dad was wheelchair-bound but I am not certain.

I should add I'm not quite sure how accurate any of this is aside from the portion describing the last chapter and the fact that her dad is absent for the entire book until chapter zero. I didn't really comprehend what was happening at the time to be virtual reality at all, and that's basically the conclusion I came to 10+ years later.

I'm pretty certain it's a stand-alone novel but I'm only about 60-40 on it being a male author.
