Maybe Ray Bradbury? It feels like a Bradbury.
The author frequently passes an elderly couple on a bench who are always arguing.
He secretly records them as he walks by - thinks they're funny?
One day, they aren't there. Later, only the woman is there. Author is sad. Edits the recordings to remove the wife's voice, leaving only the man's responses. Gives the lady the tape, later passes by to hear her playing it, adding her side of the arguments, letting her "talk" to her husband.
Help! It's driving me crazy.
