Sprawling novel set in the south with multiple main characters - a young white man, a black woman from the same small town in Alabama, Georgia or Louisiana. The you man goes to war - WWII I believe. The black woman ends up working on a large Navy ship or aircraft carrier. Her husband is abusive. She witnessed a lynching when she was a child.
